    Single speed torque on hubs

Is there any concern for hubs failing while mashing on SS bikes? Will Hadley's hold up? Or would you pay $200 more for DT240s' ? I'm 210#

Not a clyde and only sort-of a singlespeeder here, but no. The hub is the least of my worries.

My hardtail goes down to a 22/34 gear ratio. In terms of torque, that means that a little more than 150% of the torque I put into the crank gets delivered to the freehub. Now and then, I still get out of the saddle and really shove to get up something steep, even with that low a gear ratio.

On the other hand, the classic singlespeed ratios are all higher than 1:1. I've seen 2:1 cited some places, though I doubt I'd want to push that ratio off-road. With a 2:1 ratio, only 50% of the torque you put in at the crank would be delivered to the hub.

So if I was doing a conversion, I'd probably just get a singlespeed cog and a chain tensioner and go.

Thx, there's a lot to learn when you want to build a bike, but I can't wait!

    AndrwSwitch is correct.

2:1 is the classic SS MTB gear ratio for 26" bikes. Add two teeth to the cog to compensate for a 29er. These are gear ratios we actually ride off-road, some a bit higher and some a bit lower but it's definitely the right ball park.

So if a typical SS guy has 32/18 and a geared bike easily goes to 22/34, you do the math which has more potential to put torque to the rear hub.
