    road bike/ single speed

so i'm looking for a single speed to train during winter. I tried a 700x23 road tire but at almost 300 pounds I felt every crack or ding in the road. what do you think the smallest road tire I ride should be? can I get away with a 28 or do I need a 32?

I ride a 25c tire at 250. I've ridden a 23c and 25c since 320 pounds. I never had an issue. Rides as long as 70+ miles longs.

Well, first thing is to find out what your frame can run. One of my road bikes can't handle certain brand's 28mm, the other can, but just barely. So you may be limited there, if you go with a true road frame.

I have 28's on my bike now. I still feel plenty of cracks and imperfections in the pavement -- that is somewhat unavoidable on a road bike -- but I'm happy enough with the performance. I can't say they feel any slower than the 23's that came on it, but I'm not very fast anyway, so ...

Key is to get wider rims too. That allows you to run lower pressure giving a cushier ride, just like mtb tires.
