Please help, 6'8" 330 lbs and looking for a 29er hardtail.

I am 6'8" and over the last few years I have dropped from 444 to 330 lbs. I would really like to get into a new bike to help me drop another 50 lbs. but I am not sure were to start. I was thinking of the Cannondale Trail 29er SL2 or SL4. I do not plan on doing anything crazy but I don't want something that is going to snap in half. Would this Cannondale be a decent choice? Which one is a better deal, the SL2 for $1050 or the SL4 for $800. Any other brand/model suggestions? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Might check out the Specialized Rockhopper 29 and the Trek Mamba...both come in 23" frames.

How do the Specialized Rockhopper 29 and Trek Mamba compare to the Cannondale Trail SL2 29er?

Do you know what size frame the XL Cannondale is?

The Cannondale XL is only 21" and a effective top tube of 25.2"

The 23" Rockhopper has a 26.4" ETT and the Mamba has a 26.1" ETT...at your height the Cannondale XL simply looks to be too small.

Just pulled the trigger on a left over cannondale SL 4 and love it! I'm 5'11" and weigh 310 and I went with the L frame.

Try the ones that you mentioned and then decide from there. The cannondale just felt right.

    5'11" is a lot different than 6'8".

Im 6'5" and I ride a 21" Hardrock and its a tad small for me.

At your weight I'd be more concerned with the wheels than the frame. Rockhopper is a popular bike and a large bike shop should have a 23" to try out.

Not sure why you want a HT, why save weight, when you weigh so much.

Going for a solid FS frame (not a weight weenie one) will be more fun, comfortable and forgiving (so you can ride further and lose more weight).

My ride is a Niner WFO, I use it as my road bike too. It is so stiff and solid that I can put the power down unlike on all the light bikes I had.

I am 6'7 and the XL feels slightly too big for me.
Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?

With respect to the Gary Fisher / Cannondale discussion, I rode both when I was shopping (I'm 6'5", so not quite as tall as the OP). I'm long in the torso, so a long top tube was my #1 priority when shopping.

I ended up with the Gary Fisher (I bought a Marlin, but the frame geometry is the same for all the hardtails) in the XL (23") size, because I didn't feel cramped on it like I did on bikes from Cannondale, Specialized, Giant, and Felt.

    YMMV and all that.
