    New rider, new bike.

Thanks guys for all the advice, and the resource here at MTBR. I was up in the air but leaning towards Specialized, and experiencing sticker shock as I've not bought a good bike ever, and my last bike was from Costco when I was 13 or so.

Anyways, I picked this up this afternoon and just finished putting some miles on it.

Nice looking ride, how did you choose between the two?

I felt a little better on the Trek and the fork is a little better quality on the Mamba than the Specialized Rockhopper. RockShox XC32 vs Suntour SF13?

It's a 23 inch frame and it looks enormous, fits like a glove though - much better feeling for me than the Specialized XXL frame size. Much more than I needed, but I'm happy with it. I will use it on light trails, but 95% will be flat land either dirt, packed gravel, or concrete.

    You say this now...

When the MTB bug rears its evil head in full and you crave speed, this bike will still be a worthy steed.

I hope so! Evil reared it's head yesterday and I paid for it. My girlfriend and I both bought bikes yesterday, hers is mellow - a Giant Sedona. Anyway, I zoomed down a slope and she came behind me, turned around at the bottom just in time to see her totally stack.

Spent the rest of the night paying the price and feeling bad for it, and being glad she only had a couple scrapes.

Anyway, it handled nicely and it's a very nice bike.

@ SasquatchSC - this is the '13 Trek Mamba, I didn't end up getting the Specialized!
