Need help deciding on new bike (29er)

    Hey Guys,

I just south of 300# and am currently trying to decide between a 13' Giant Talon 29er 1 ($899 t LBS) or the 13' Trek Mamba ($940 at LBS) I plan on doing some trail riding and paths to get into drop weight and get into shape and move onto more aggressive riding later on. I know I will become more aggressive as my weight drops as I use to ride a lot bmx when I was younger and honestly I usually tend to push myself the more I get comfortable. I tried them both and they feel pretty good I was just looking to see if you guys have any more insight that may help in my decision.

    Thank you.

    Cheers

Are you opposed to looking at used bike? You can get a lot of bike for a $1000 used

I am not opposed to it but I do like the comfort of warranties.

If you can pull it off, spend the extra $200 and go for the Talon 0. In my somewhat newbie experience, I think the components will save you money down the road.

    FYI:

    I'm 6'2, 233 and ride a 2012 Giant XTC 1
My 16 year old son is 6'3 250 and rides a 2012 Giant Talon 1. If I would have found a good deal on a Talon 0, I would have bought it!

I totally understand where your coming from as far as the warranties are concerened. I'm 6'3" and currently 273lbs (down from 308 jan 1) and I was worried I would break whatever bike I bought. I tried a Trek mamba and liked it...but as many have probably told you the weak point will be the wheels. If you ride paths and groomed trails you'll be fine until you drop some weight. I am like you and used to ride BMX when I was younger, because of this I ended up going with a 26" bike because I found it to be a lot more manuverable and fun to ride. You might try a 26" if thats your riding style, 26" wheels also flex less and parts are cheaper...Just a thought
