For me I think it is getting old.......however
I think TooTallUK covered most of them I would emphasis drinking enough water, making sure your eating enough and the right stuff and one issue I found....
Not sure if this is your problem since it summer right now but for if I ride in cold weather and don't wear tights or leg warmers of just Knee warmers, I get sore knees and muscles specially as I get older.......

Stretching is huge and I have noticed since taking Pilates I have improved as a mountain biker!
I would heartily recommend purchasing a 6" diameter "Foam roller" for use on the outer quads (vastus lateralis) and the IT bands. This "rolling" is remarkably reliving of leg stiffness and also significantly improves the stiffness in my lower back.
Foam roll from time to time, other than that, light stretching (do not over extend anything). I've seen plenty of people over stretching, which ends up being counter productive. Light stretching and some foam rolling goes a long way. Epsom salt soaks help too.
currently experiencing muscle stiffness, because of a rigid fat bike. My normal ride is a 29er, and riding rocks and roots on a rigid will quickly beat the muscles up. Couple times on the trail, and it'll be better as muscles get used to it. I should have stretched a bit more afterwards too.
