How do you know what fits?

Well I have been looking at a few upgrades for my bike mainly getting rid of my plastic pedals. are pedals universal? If not how do I know which ones will fit?

    Thanks,
    -Nathan

    Pedals are fairly standardized.
9/16" for MTB's and raodies. And most BMX.
1/2" for smaller kids bikes and some junky wallywold bikes.
That is the size of the threads that go into the crank arm.
That is not always the size or type of wrench that is needed to install/remove pedals.
Some pedals use an Allen wrench instead of an open end wrench.
And of course the pedals should be marked "L" & "R" due to the fact that one of them is reverse threads.

You should be able to get the specs for your bike form a google search.
    next time

If you are new to cycling, this is the most important thing to remember.

The other thing that differess between pedals is the cleat if you go with clipless.
