I use a U-Lock through the frame and rear wheel with 2 of the steel cables attached to it (1 through the trailer hitch hole and another through the rack). It's enough to deter any casual thieves, but if someone really wants your bike they'll get it. I never leave it unattended for long.
I have a square profile case hardened chain. My bike won't cooperate with a u-lock arrangement and a hardened chain is a little slower to cut than cable. I've also packed the bike (and rack) inside car if I thought it was necessary. Haven't had any trouble.
