Looking for a 2- bike rack good for driving long distance

Hello everyone, I know that there are a lot of threads about this but not specifically for what I am looking for. Sorry in advance. Let me get started. I have a 2013 toyota corolla type S w/spoiler. I am looking into buying a 2-bike rack. The thing that I am worried about is transporting my girlfriends bike and mine from Los Angeles - Seattle. (I don't know if this helps but I have a 2007 trek 820 and my gf's is a 2005 trek 820 st). I want something that is sturdy and just damn right solid. (piece of mind when driving that far). Also, I will be using this rack to get around town as well. I would like a rack thats not going to break the bank either. In the past I have had a trunk rack that was $30 bucks(piece of crap) but was curious on the thule gateway 2.(Not sure about long distance driving). I also had a roof rack on my old civic but that got stolen. I am very curious to know if I should get a hitch installed on my car.
Any advice would be wonderful. Thanks for the help and once again sorry for another thread on this topic
