I need a hitch rack to carry 2 bikes on my truck. I won't use it often as I usually transport the bikes in the truck bed - but occasionally I'll need it (1-2x a month).
Since it's just used occasionally, and I'll be removing it when not in use, I don't something super heavy. We have the original Sportworks on our car, and it's a bear to install/remove single handed due to weight. I also would prefer something cheaper than 1up since it's going to spend more time in the garage than on the truck.
I'll be carrying a mix of bikes from 29ers to kids bikes, full suspension and funky frame designs that preclude easy use of the hanging type racks. I'd prefer something that doesn't scratch up the frames, but I'm fine applying protective tape to the frames if needed. I want to be able to lower the tailgate of the truck -without- bikes on the rack.
Looking around, it seems that the Saris Thelma is a potential option, though it's not flexible when it comes to kid sized bikes.
The Saris Freedom and similar Swagman-style 'post' platform racks that contact the frame seem like they'd work, too, if I can protect the frames.

I've also seen the Rola NV2, which seems interesting, but there's a review on amazon about the wheel cradle failing while heading down the road, and it looks like the bikes would rub against the rack anyway...

I had a Raxter in the past, and it fit the bill size/weight wise - but I found the velcro to be unreliable after a bit of time and in heavy rains.
Any other recommendations?
