4 bike racks stick out so far, and even farther with the spare tire on the rear. For the FJ, I think the North Shore racks are a pretty good choice. They are supposed to be easy to use and fold up small.

I have an FJ and use a 1upUSA rack. Mine is the heavy duty version that's designed to haul up to 4 bikes with the add-ons. I've only used mine to haul 2 bikes though. I have a Curt frame hitch and it sticks out enough that the spare tire doesn't interfere. The 1 up racks are pricey but in this case you do get what you pay for. Also, each tray goes up and back at an angle (15 degrees I think) so you maintain ground clearance.

I'm curious how the 1up rack works with the swing door on the FJ. Are you able to open the back gate fully with/without bikes loaded?

No, that is an inconvenience... The rack does pivot but not low enough to open the gate with the bikes on, but it does pivot down enough to open the gate without the bikes on. Also, you can pivot the rack up when you're not hauling bikes but it won't go to the vertical position because of interference with the spare tire.

I use the North Shore Rack NSR-4 on my Wrangler.
    The good...
Holds four bikes with minimal overhang
Clears the spare with no extension
Loading a bike is a less than 10-second proposition
Off-roading is good and great clearance
Solid with Anti-Wobble pin in place

    The bad...
Will only work with mountain bikes (or bikes with a large fork crown)
Putting on/off isn't tough but not nearly as easy as the 1Up or Kuat
Swing gate only can open about 18"

If I only needed a two bike, KŁat or 1Up... but for four, this is my best choice.

Ok, I bought the Apex by Thule with swing out. The North Shore does not fit kid bikes...which is a problem.
