Hitch rack on BMW X5 E70? Experience

I want to get a hitch mounted bike rack for my BMW X5 E70, preferably the Thule Easyfold.

The issue is that the hitch and the exhaust pipes are pretty much at the same level...I am afraid damaging the carrier, or even worse the bikes.

Does anybody have experience with that car/carrier combination and advise if my concerns are valid?

not exactly sure on that particular rack but I did read a thread where someone with an x5 melted their wheel on the way to the trail because of the location of the exhaust pipes. try searching around on the forum, I know its on here somewhere

Make a heat shield out of some aluminum sheet?

Use a riser to avoid the melted wheel problem.
