    Car bike rack

I'm new to this forum and look forward to advice from those of you who have spent more time riding and those of you who can share your knowledge with a newbie.

I'm looking for a bike rack for my 2013 Kia Optima , prefer 3 bike hitch mount rack . I will have to get a Class 1 hitch put on the car . That is the biggest hitch they will install.

    Any suggestions

    Thanks

    Jim

1Up are nice racks and its nice if you just want to carry one bike and even then, it will run someone $300.00. If the OP is looking for a platform rack, then his choices are limited to 2 or 4 bikes. The 1Up rack for 3 bikes won't work on a Class 1 hitch since they're usually 1 1/4".

A Thule 916 with the 2 bike add on (4 total) would run around $650.00+. Inno does make the 305 which carries 2 bikes for $400 + the 1 bike add on for $150.00.

If a platform rack isn't necessary, then the Thule Sportsrack runs about $190 and the Yakima Double Down will run around $230.

I am leaning towards a rack that will secure the wheels as I travel. Was hoping for a rack that would hold 3 max, most likely two.

    Thanks for your help

Unfortunately, the 1upUSA rack to hold 2-4 bikes don't fit on a 1 1/4" hitch. Plus, not everyone will want to throw down $530 for a rack.

Get the 2" hitch. If one's available. I have one on my 05 Honda CRV. Even if you get a different rack than the 1UpUSA it wills till be a more stable platform for any hitch.

My only problem is the place that installs the hitches states a 2 inch hitch will void warranty on the car due to unibody construction

The rack will hold up to 2 bikes with 1.25" hitch.

I'm not sure why that would void the warranty unless you were pulling a "heavy" load and not carrying bikes on a rack. But I'm sure you are correct.

The car is only rated for a 1.25, and that will carry 2000lbs. Anything heavier such as a 2 inch which will carry heavy load which will pop out the back window due to the uni body and void the warranty so I am told.

The only three bike rack that will fit a 1.25" hitch is the Saris Thelma. It's a decent rack, and will handle 29'ers as well as 26's.

With the Quik Rack add on, yes. But now we're talking $700-$850 for a rack to hold 3 bikes. I was looking at the HD 2 Bike rack.

Saris Thelma looks like a decent rack but the plastic tire cups (holders) scare me for durability reasons.

That's not true. You can hang 3 bikes off a 1 1/4" hitch 1Up rack, as long as they are not all 40+ pound DH bikes... and even then it would probably be fine. They used to say 4 bikes were fine, but backed that off to 3 bikes.

I mean, 2000 pound towing weight limit, 200 pound tongue rating of a 1 1/4" hitch is well within the limits, even with the added leverage.

I was told by the cycle shop 3 bikes would be max on a 1.25 in hitch. That's one reason I'm here to get advice from you guys ...thanks

Friend of mine has one, and uses it all the time with absolutely no issues with the plastic cups. I had the two bike version, and honestly, it was a nice rack. I had quality issues with mine, although I think that it had more to do with the hitch I had vs. the rack.
