    Used C'dale: What To Look Out For?

    Hey guys,

    Will be looking at a used 2003 Cannondale F600 tomorrow and was wondering if there is anything I should particularily look out for or test, esp in C'dales? As in checking out a used car is there a general checklist? This will be the first time potentially purchasing a used bike, so not really sure.

    I would imagine:

    • Drive Train - Look for rust, worn cogs?
    • Rim damage - bent rims?
    • Cracks - Where to look?
    • Mechanical Disc Brakes - What to look out for?
    • Headshock - How to test?

    Anything I missed?

    Additionally, the seller is asking for $575, but considering it was $1100 new and is 5 yrs. old, i'm thinking it's too high. Thoughts?

    Make sure the Headshok holds air and the lockout works....

    Agree...575 sounds plenty, but I tend to favor new stuff myself.

    I hear you on the new stuff. My heart is/was pretty much set on the F3, but the thought of saving $600+ is quite tempting and I don't think the F600 is 1/2 the bike.

    Dents, dents, dents. Any C-Dale that gets ridden hard will get dented. Not to knock C-Dale because I love them and would not hesitate to buy another one but the large tubes do dent easliy so make sure you go over all the tubes in different lighting to make sure you see everything.

    you should look out for pretty much all the things you mentioned in your first post.

    it is a 2003 model, but that doesn't say a lot -
    it could have been used off road a lot or a little,
    it could have been used for no off roading at all,
    it could have been cared for good or bad,
    it could have been upgraded or still be stock,
    the chain, cogs and chainrings could have been changed or not,
    it could have been used for loads of miles or just a few rides,
    it could have been in every weather or just in dry weather....

    so first of all i would look at the overall condition and then look at the in all the posts mentioned details - i think if the overall condition is good, then it was usually being cared for in the details too (not sure if that makes sense )

    but either way - $575 is pretty steep (so you just have to throw in your negotiating skills).

    If you are not sure after you inspect it may be you can take to a bike shop for a tuneup and ask what the bike needs??? A good bike shop, let me repeat it a good bike shop.
    What do I know, ask the "experts"!

    Hi Fritz,

    Thanks for checking in. However, the person never showed. Apparently, there was some type of miscommunication as she thought we were meeting the day before. She has since sold the bike, so it's back to the drawing board for me. Will probably stick with a new bike as there are less hassles and unknowns.

    Was 95% set on the C'dale BBQ F3, but now also looking at the Stumpjumper HT.

    shoot, the price is fine...i paid $650 for a pristine F700..2001. but its sweet though...guy didnt ride much, new tires and brake pads and i am lovin it.
