Hey all. I asked the question in the Lefty Tech thread, but got crickets.
So, I got this used Lefty Max, 2008-ish vintage, and I always thought the A to C was a tad on the short side. Maybe I should actually bother to measure it.
I'm using on a 29er hardtail... a Salsa Mamasita. I took it apart and found it had a brown damper in there. I expected a red damper. Weird. I tried to cut the seal tube a bit to let the fork out, but now it top-out clunks, even after a bearing reset. I put the cut piece back in there, and now it works as it did before.
I can't find any reference for the brown damper. Is this the wrong damper for the fork, thus explaining why it's short? Somehow, I thought there were green dampers for the shorter Speed Leftys, and red dampers for the Lefty Max series, but brown?
heh... I got such a good deal on the fork, I'm not crying too much about this, but I would like to fix it... get a bit more travel out of it. I got my other similar Lefty Max to 120mm of travel and the tire still clears by millimeters.
Also, the Mamasita frame with an older o-ring type Chris King headset barely clears the fork.... like by 1-2mm with some puzzle-like tweaking to get it to go. I gotta say, I'm less than impressed by this headset. I might just swap it out for a Cane Creek. The CK creaks a bit, and the adjustment is way finicky. One day, it's fine, the next it binds, the next it has slop.... all by minor temperature variances, it seems. Is the newer CK headset with a split ring any better?
