Been searching for a thread covering brake replacement on a 2010 Scalpel. This bike does not get ridden much and now the brakes are sticking. Yesterday morning the first time I applied the front it locked and I went over the bars. Hurt my dignity more than anything else but don't want to do that again. It's been a while since getting road rash.
Anyway, the last time one of my bikes, 1999 Super V 2000, started having brake problems I eventually had to start from scratch and replace them.
This time I want to skip the whole expensive repair/replacementy process.
Anybody please suggest a new off the shelf set for this bike. Thank You, Tommy
Just been thinking about Brakes myself and have narrowed it down to Shimano XT or Zee's.
The latter having 4 pistons and lighter than XT. You can also match these up with ICE TECH rotors for the best performance and increase rotor size from 180/160 to 203/180 if the budget allows.
Brakes will always cause a debate and they are varied in their cost. If however you have no limit on budget and want some bling, check out some Hope's!
I just got my first set of XT's for my single speed and they are pretty sweet. If I had it to do over, I might have gotten a Zee for the front and the XT for the rear, but I don't regret getting XT's front and rear. I replaced the Elixirs on my F29 with Hopes. Those brakes are the sh!t. I have 4 piston front and 2 piston rear. They are awesome but pricey.
I second that statement. All gear/shifting components have been replaced with Shimano products on this bike. This has been a personal preference since buying my first Dura Ace group in 1987.
What I'm wondering about now is why not change the brakes over to mechanical? From what I remember over the ten years riding my Super V was that the overwhelming percentage of "fixes" were to the hydraulic brake system. If mechanical brakes work ok sure would be a more permanent "fix".
Agreed, the Shimano brakes right now are probably the best the industry has ever seen.
The ceramic pistons will likely prevent a lot of the cheesing up that happened with previous materials, so you should have fewer issues with brakes freezing up due to lack of use.
However, if you really want to hedge your bet, the Avid BB7 S (the new stainless updated version) are the one truly decent mechanical out there. Now how it is they are so good, and the entire rest of the Avid brake line so godawful, is another question.....
Thanks for the consultation on this new to me "fix". Got the parts ordered and they should be here Tuesday. Sure will nice to get back on a bike with gears, gonna put my single speed to rest except for the occasional slow ride downtown to see the evening's sights, Tommy
