Here is my 2013 SL1 in hybrid bike night mode. I have a second wheelset and a second seatpost and seat for hitting the dirt. I take it alot on night rides with my labrador attached to the seatpost. I'm trying to make this my "do it all" bike.

    I got the bug that led to upgrades already;

    - 1x10 setup with raceface narrow/wide ring (eliminated front shifter and derailer)
    - XTR rear derailer shifter (stock deroe got some gunk or something and started sticking when upshifting.
    -Odi Grips
-SLX 10 speed cassette on the city/hybrid wheelset
-Schwalbe land cruiser tires on hybrid wheelset/ RocketRon and RacingRalph on the set for the dirt.
    -Shimano Saint Pedals
-twofish lockblock with lighthound xm-l 18650 540 lumen light. (i strap in a xm-l mini when i'm not sure if i'll get home before dark)

I kind of wish sometimes I would of found a cool color like that. If I ever need something nicer for the dirt, i'd convert my trail-sl into a full time urban bike and get something cool in a bright orange or blue like that.

    My First Bike...

2012 Cannondale 29er Trail SL4, and lovin' every moment on her so far. Have only done very basic upgrades so far like Ergon GS1s, a pair of Cannondale water bottle cages, and just recently purchased a CamelBak Mule NV and a NiteRider Lumina 650/NiteRider Solas taillight which rock! Anyways, I'm a newbie and very excited to be part of this community!

    12/23/13- Michelins Wild Grip'R 29 tyres.
    2/08/14- Ergon GS1s.
    3/12/14-FSA SL-K carbon seat-post installed.
    3/15/14-Mavic Crossride 29s.
3/24/14- FSA SL-K carbon flat handlebar.
    4/10/14- Avid Elixir 5 brakes & 2X9 setup.
6/25/14- Shimano Deore XT clipless pedals.
    10/4/14- Shimano Saint M820 shifter, Shimano XTR M986 rear derailleur 10 speed, Shimano XT Dyna-Sys M771 10 speed cassette/Shimano XT HG95 chain.
10/8/14- Shimano Zee cranks, and RaceFace NW chainring 36T 1X10 setup(eliminated front shifter and derailleur).
    10/24/14- Ergon SM3 saddle
1/26/15- 2015 RockShox Reba RL, FSA SL-K carbon stem
7/27/15- Shimano XT M785B, Shimano Ice Tech RT86 180mm (hated the Avids Elixir 5s!!)

My next real upgrades are a shorter stem, Fox forks (seems like I see them on every bike in magazines..lol), and I was looking into Michelin's Wild Grip'R tires as well. The 2012 SL4 was the bike I wanted, but when the dealer sold out of them, I was forced to look at other options. Then I found Trek.

I love the Blue - I could not find anyone with Blue in my size. I got a great deal on mine. They were trying to get rid of the 2013's because the 2014's are coming in. $900 instead of $1330.

Here are a couple of pics of my freshly Lefty-fied trail.
It's a 2011 SL2 29. Served me well for a couple of years with a light set of crossmax rims and rocket ron's. Recently started replacing/modifying things. It's now 2X10 with X0 grip shifters, new X0 derailleurs, Stan's Arch wheels with a blissfully quiet DT240 rear hub. And of course, the Lefty. A 2011 PBR carbon. Sent it off to Mendon cyclesmith to have him work his magic on it before installing. It is now utterly fabulous.

13 miles later, I tried to take a pic at the exact spot that deputydog2003 took his.
    It's close.

    I haven't seen many of these here: 2012 SL2 in 26". I love the bike, and I bought it specifically because I wanted a 26" hardtail :-)
Not a huge fan of the color scheme but that's the least important part.

Why is your seat so low? Are you a dirt jumper, BMX, or just short?

Actually I had just had it up and had rode a ways and started to get sore so I put it down as I got close to my truck. I do normally run it low though for dirt jumps and street riding, but I do every kind of riding I can.

what do i need to mount this fork on my trail with the 1.5 steer tube? what headset adapter is necessary?

    http://www.pricepoint.com/Brand/Mani...-29er-Fork.axd

    QR15 100 Taper or QR15 100 1.125?

I'd rather have the tapered steer, is that harder to convert? Never done a fork swap before.

Other than that, it's brilliant. I'm now trying to decide whether I should keep or sell my other bike, a 2012 Bad Boy Fatty r4. It's also a fantastic bike.

Things to add.... I got a pump screwed to the seat tube and a little under seat bag with a tube, levers
Nice, I bought the same bike (August 2013). Question: what does "sl2" signify?

    SL2 means absolutely nothing important.
SL is the "super light" Trail, and the 2 means it is the second in the line (from highest spec to lowest)

Hello all. This is Gerry and new to the mountain biking environment. Just started riding again after 15 years but been running 10k & 1/2 Marathon for the last 2 years. My hunt for bike started as a cross training purpose. I originally want to get a bike from the Bad Boy line up, instead I bought 2 Cannondale last month (Trail 6 and Quick 4) but after hittting the trail again with the Trail 6, I end up returning both bikes and stick with Mtn. Bike and I choose SL2 29'ers.

I've used it 4 times already in the trail by my house and love it....I'm still learning though how to balance going uphill and taking the corners on a downhill and so far, like what I said....I LOVE THE BIKE.

No major upgrade yet except for the front tires (Continental Trail King 29x2.2) and Wellgo BMX Pedal....the bug upgrade has already hit me coz' I'm already saving up for the Reverb Seat Post.

I'm thinking of removing the big chain ring and replace it with a basher guard....i don't know why except it looks cool having only the 2 chain ring plus I don't remember using it in the last few times (4) that I hit the trail.

anyways, I want to say hi to all of you and I know I would learn a lot from this forum

Local bike shop. Hand built wheel, full warranty for the life of the wheel including spoke truing :-)

I don't remember the total cost but it was pretty comparable to a similar set online.

I also have the berserker green 2011 SL4. Has gotten me through 3 years of college trails and some other adventures along the way. This is on the most recent ride, a pretty miserable hot, humid morning with a monster climb that I was not quite up for.

Upgrades are a 1.5" steerer 80mm travel Recon Gold TK and Deore hydros. Also have ODIs and WTB Bronsons.

I don't plan on selling this bike but I'm also at a crossroads on whether I want to upgrade this bike or buy a new one entirely. I guess I'll just have to see how the new trails are where I'll be living for the near future.

I just picked her up on Friday - 2013 Cannondale Trail SL 3 - Keep in mind I'm coming from a BD Motobecane so to me this is night and day!!

$699.00 minus what I sold my other bike for $499.00 - The last one @ my LBS.

    Awesome Bike!

hello there my fellow Trail bikers :-D I'm having a bug upgrade with a budget of $250 to $300....I did both tires already, Trail King 2.2 and I will definitely change my handle bar to much wider than the stock one. Do you have any other suggestion? My main purpose for upgrade is for lighter and performance. TIA :-)

    Cannondale Trail 5

I just bought the bike last weekend & I love it! So stoked to get back into mountain biking. I needed a good bike to help me w/ my cardio & legs for riding/racing my dirtbike. I bought this bike used for $340, the same one is up at REI for $750, so I'm happy w/ the deal I got.

The bike feels light, nimble & the brakes are decent. I haven't hit any hard off road yet, but plan to soon. We have so many paved/off road bike areas in & around Atlanta, so theres no shortage of riding areas!

So far, I have replaced/added the chain w/ a Sram PC850, Kenda Smallblock 2.1 rear tire, water bottle holder & a Lizard Skin chain protector. Earlier this week, I ordered a Fox Transition helmet, Sette Vin bar ends & Wellgo B184 flat pedals. Can't wait for those! I'm looking at stems & handlebars now, I just need advice on what set up I need for my height & style! All suggestions are welcome. I'm new to mountain biking again after a 15yr layoff

Anyone got a Trail 5? How do you like it? I found a good deal on a 2014 Trail 5 and wanting to buy it. How's the XCM fork?

Did you end up getting it? I am looking at the 2014 5 29er. How is it?

I am trying to decide between Cannondale and Giant talon and can't see why cannondale seems to be priced much higher. You get less with the Cannondales, is there a reason on this? I have cannondale road bikes and love them so I would like to try there mountain bike but I can't find a reason why I shouldn't go for a Giant Talon instead. It's cheaper with better components.

i think you should go with the giant its specced better at this level all the frames are probably made in the same place anyway.

Cannondale frames are probably some of the best alloy frames out there, and that's why they are priced a lot higher than other brands, also I think they use better wheels at the price point.
But maybe you should go with the Giant (or Trek) if you are looking for a bike with the best component spec. But for that price you should be able to get a Trek X-Cal 6
    X-Caliber 6 - Trek Bicycle
It's better than both the Giant and the Cannondale.

I was wondering about the wheels but I guess both brands are fairly cheap for the price point. I guess I would also have to decide between 27.5 and 29. I haven't ridden a mountain bike in years. I ride mostly road bikes.

Is the frame better? My lbs has one trail 5 left from last year and its priced similar to the giant talon 3. Problem is 2 different shops and both pretty far away from me.

The Cannondale frame is better. But also I hate Giant and I am always biased against them so I would recommend you go with the C'dale.
As for the wheel sizes, I prefer 29" wheels but whatever fits you best is what you should buy. If that Trail 5 doesn't fit right then you shouldn't buy it.

I prefer smaller wheels, but they're both great bikes. I'd take the one you feel better riding or the one that you think looks better and call it good.

    Here's my Trail SL:

Anyone have a good estimate on the weight of a sl 2 29er North American version. The one with rockshox gold fork. I know weight shouldn't be a huge factor but it's hard to find that info

Hi Trail riders, a quick question. I'm looking for a wider tire will this fit my Trail SL3? (2013) I'm in SoCal so the terrain is as dry as you can imagine and my stock tires are just not doing the job. 26x2.3 will work? Thanks in advance

Here goes a picture of my 2011 Trail SL-3. Most of it is stock, only things I replaced are front and back tires are continental 26x2.4, front is X-King and rear is Trail King both folding with Chili Compound. Also changed the pedals to Wellgo MG-1. I need to replace the grips soon and probably change out the stem and handlebar next.

Sweet - I'm trying to do the same but with Red (since I have read high-lights on the bike) - How do you like the Wellgos MG1?

Nice, red looks good. The MG-1 are ok, cheap pedals but I want to upgrade to something nicer, never had any problems with them

Thanks for taking the time J Hartman - I ended up with WTB Wirewolfs 26x2.3 - They will get a try out in the morning. A bit heavy but I'm hoping to improve traction.

What do you have on 2011 model? I have a 2013 and it has an XC30. I was thinking of changing it but decided to keep it until I get my next bike. With that said, here is a thread I started and some replies that might give you some ideas.

The SL3 came with the deuce 100mm spring fork. The SL 2 had the rockshox recon silver. I'm sure I could find the recon silver and it would be an easy swap, but I was looking for different options.

I did buy a tapred rockshox dual air off eBay, come to find out after not doing enough research, it would fit, but my lbs couldn't find an adapter to fit in the headtube because it is not a "true 1.5".

Lbs got an adapter and it was a couple mm too big. They couldn't find one that fit the headtube. They even had their Cannondale rep look at it and he said they no longer make an adapter that will fit the sl3 to fit a tapered fork. I bought a tapered rockshox Reba and sadly had to return it. They were looking for an adapter for a week or so and after not being able to find one they said it wasn't possible. Apperantly its not a true 1.5 headtube, it is a couple mm smaller

I purchased the rigid fatty from the single speed sl from a dude on this forum. I am glad I went rigid. I was not happy with the RST duece that came with the bike.

The RST duece was fine when I got the bike, but as I've progressed over the years its just doesn't want to hold up. Rebound control is broken and rebuilding the suspension seems like a waste. I want to go with air but sadly it seems there are no options. I don't think I can go rigid, especially since I've been pricing out FS bikes lol

Something seems off here. I'm running a tapered fork in a 2012 sl3 with no issues at all and I've read of plenty of other people doing the same.

I can't understand why the 2011 model would have a different sized headtube that's NEITHER 1-1/8 or 1.5. It is described as having a normal 1.5 is it not?

What adapter did they try and what did cane creek say exactly?

There is a thread I've posted on in here (started by a guy replacing his headset) that gives the headset(s) I replaced the stock one with:

    SL4 1.5 Headtube Reducer New 1-1/8 Fork

Have a look at posts #9, #23 and my stuff on page 2 and see what you think.

Another Trail SL3 Single Speed. Mostly stock. I did upgrade the bars and seat post to carbon fiber and Wellgo MG-5 pedals. Comes in at 24.75 lbs.

Whats the max tire width I can fit on the rear?

I went Weirwolf 2.3 - It is a heavy tire but I need it for my terrain.
