    Let’s see your Bad Boys!



    A European ’07 Bad Boy Ultra with the Headsite, Fi’zi:k Blink and CatEye Micro Wireless.

    It’s my second Bad Boy; the previous one was a ’08 Ultra 8 which I swapped for this ’07 Ultra. I had the 8 only for five days - the Ultra is way better, and I like the geometry of the 2007 frame more. It’s also got a much nicer paintjob!

    Just bought the Bad Boy Ultra 2009. I live in Japan so it was a little difficult to get hold of. I'm not that familiar with gear set up though. What does the shifter on the left bar do? The guy tried to explain it me but my Japanese is not that good.

    It operates the front derailleur which moves the chain between the front rings, attached to your cranks.

    I see. What is the advantage of that? Does it allow you to shift quicker or something? I think he said something like that.

    Front gears are larger jumps at a time ~ 10 teeth instead of 1 or 3 or so.

    Ah, I see. Thanks for the info. I didn't know that. Is there any other advice anyone would give a first-time owner? Servicing, things to look out for etc?

    LOVE my Brooks...I have over 2500 miles on it now..still looks the same, Comfortable, durable, a tad on the heavy side, but so am I. lol

    Heres my 2008 Bad Boy Rohloff;





    Only changed the bars for some Eastons in these pics. Its currently running as a 69er with a 26" matching Sun DS2 up front and cross tyres all round. I want to run it as a 29er mtb but you cant put anything bigger on a 700c x 28 on the front with the fatty headshock. Good excuse for a lefty I think

    I thought the Rohloff was pretty much the perfect commuter bike, the Rohloff gearing was superb.

    It was the perfect commuter bike, when I cycled 5 miles to work. I now live less than a mile away so walk, and head office is 200 miles away so I most definately drive that. Hence the bike is seeing only recreational use, and as I have a nice road bike already the bad boy will be only seeing offroad duty.

    Rohloffs are superb though. I would never have considdered one before buying this. But I got such a good deal on the bike I couldnt turn it down. Now I dont think I'd even considder anything else if I was building up a purpose MTB. I'd recomend one to anyone.

    I would see about putting two 26" rims on the bike with as big as tyres you can get on, then you would have a good mtb. Is it possible to have the Rohloff hub rebuilt onto to a 26" rim? The Rohloff Bad Boy and the Bad Boy Ultra 2008 models are the very best Bad Boys at their peak. 2009 models are lesser quality.

    Great bike tho, i'm also considering what was said above, getting a hope hoop with DT Swiss 4.2d for the front and getting a 4.2d rim built onto the alfine for the back.

    I was about to pull the trigger on an '08 ultra 8 instead of mine but a different shop offered me the rohloff for less than the rrp on the u8!!!

    However the alfine would have made me just as happy. I virtually never use the extremities of the gearing on the rohloff, I keep it between 5 and 12 99% of the time. The alfine had plenty of gear range for my needs. I also far prefer rapid fire style shifters, but was slightly dissapointed that the alfine one doesnt block shift in either direction. My rohloff hasnt fully broken in yet so I cant say for sure, but the alfine felt smoother to shift. Its also nice not having the annoying 7-8 gear issue of the rohloff as they are the gears I use the most. For the price difference I dont think you are any worse off with the alfine what so ever. It is a very nice hub. Go for it, I dont think you'll regret it!!

    I have a bike with a Nexus red band ( same internals as Alfine) and a 1FG with a Rohloff.

    It's not very comparable , it's really two different leagues.The price too isn't in the same league !
    The Alfine makes a nice commuter drive but I wouldn't use it on my main MTB.
    I have the Rolhoff since 2006 , changes the cables after one week , since then , I changed oil once. And it has been through serious mud and snow.

    Rohloff , no contest....

    bay boy from days of yore

    ok so i have seen some very nice bad boys on this site but given that i have recently re-discovered my love of off-road i figured i'd include my limited-budget attempt at showing what a bb from about 6 years ago is still capable of beyond the road ..... since i papped these [very well reviewed] forks on the bike has ridden more like a sofa than a bike, which to me is a testimony to the fact that it ain't just an 'mtb with a fancy paint-job'. but then again, some of you may call it sacriledge ...

    Heres my 2008 Bad Boy Rohloff. Admitedly it looks more like a caffine now than what it started out, but I love how clean it looks. Only fitted the lefty a few days ago after the headshok decided to pack up on me.







    I love it, and I think it is actually faster in an urban environment now than it was on 700c wheels. The Racing Ralphs roll very well, but give you the grip and confidence to really throw it through the lanes and alley ways in a way you simply cant on 700c x 28 tires!

    Here is my Bad Boy. Bought it and immediately upgraded it. It is way more bike then I "need", but I love riding it. It is my all around bike that sees more use than any of my other bikes that I have.

    My BB Ultra and a question



    This is my BB Ultra 2009. I bought it a couple of months ago as a replacement for my 18 years old Cannondale Omega whose frame died on me while commuting to work...very sad on the one hand cause I truly loved that bike and had updated all the components many times, the frame was just too good to change ;-) On the bright side Cannondale honored their lifetime warranty and gave me an F5 frame for it (well, not great but more than I expected! Anyway, I sold it.) and I got to buy a Bad Boy! I am totally in love with the bike. With the 28inch wheels it's so much faster than the Omega (although that one had thin 26 inch slicks on it) and the geometry is ideal for squeezing through between double decker buses and refuse trucks in London rush hour traffic ;-) I replaced the original 32 cassette (absolutely no need for this here) with a 12-23 and the original seat post with a WTB TXC because I needed the extra 5cm (and the original seat post is a cheap piece of sh** to be honest ). Also stuck SPD pedals on it of course. For me it's the ideal urban bike and I might even get a set of 26 inch wheels and hit some trails in the countryside...

    By the way I've got a question that maybe somebody here can answer: I always thought the Bad Boy simply was a MTB frame with a special paint job and 28inch wheels squeezed into the fork. I now had a closer look at the F-series bikes on the Cannondale website and they are different. The rear dropouts have a different design, that's where the difference is most obvious. Can anyone clarify this? Are BB frames only used in BBs or does Cannondale also use them in other models? If they are specialist BB frames does that have any implications for their off-road use? Any information on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

    The european Bad Boys have a bad boy specific frame as far as I know yes but they can be used off-road just fine.

    Well up to now, the european urban bike range was much more extensive in Europe than in the US so Cannondale put the energy developping urban bikes for the european market while the few urban bikes in the US were mostly just a little line with whatever they had already done. The reason for that is European were using bikes to commute and as transportation a lot while typically in North America, people use a bike to ride a bike but take their cars to commute. That means urban bikes sell well in Europe but don't in North America.

    These are generalisations of course and with the economy and the gaz prices climbing in North America, it is slowly changing. There are more bike paths, more people on bikes on a daily basis and some cities even have public bike systems now... We're still way behind cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen but, slowly it's getting better... and hopefully, less people will be fat!

    So for 2010, the Cannondale urban range is growing in North America, I think the Bad Boy specific frames will be used here too...

    If your frame is US made, there should be a sticker somewhere that says so, on the top tube near the stem or down the seastays maybe?

    Thanks again. Yes, that all makes sense now...I have not seen a sticker on my bike...need to haver a closer look I guess. The F5 they gave me was made in Taiwan, it had a sticker on the bottom bracket...but no matter where it has been made, the BB frame looks very nice indeed

    wow... so many questions to ask! in what way are the 2009's a downgrade from the 2008s? would i be right in assuming, from the information on this thread, that a european bb frame (bb specific) would be lighter and more road-sorted geometry, where as an american bb is just a re-sprayed mtb frame? would a european bb 700 frame (originally spec'd with 700c wheels) still be ok for mtb?

    you see, i have the choice of getting a 2008 second hand, a 2009 at a very good price, or waiting till the 2010's to come out... choices choices...

    Here is a quick question that's sort of off topic. Anyone ride in Denmark? I may have to work there for 3 months this fall and was wondering if it would be cheaper to pack my bike or just buy a sweet euro model. I would love to find a solid lefty version that I could take back home with me to the states. What's better than a Bad Boy in my garage? Two Bad Boys in my garage of course

    The bikes are much more expensive in Europe though.... And the rigid Lefty Bad Boy and Fatty Solo Bad Boy will be available in North America for 2010...

    I'd bring my bike, just fly with a company that won't charge you to transport your bike (Air France charged me $150CAD to bring my bike to France this summer, and another 150euros to bring it back, I'm not flying with them ever again) and pack it well.

    Here is my early 2007 BBU. I upgraded to XT shifters/etc right away. Nothing else special on it though. I love this bike and want to get a MT Bike wheelset for it, just trying to figure out what'd be best for mostly street/occasional trail riding.

    Any suggestions?

    I was just given a badboy disc... It's awesome, but I want to be able to mountain bike. Is there anyway I get the headshok and use it with this frame? The reason I ask is that it appears the frames of the two bikes (disc vs. ultra) are slightly different. It looks like the badboy ultra frame is angled to the ground more than the disc... does that make sense?

    I love my BB Ultra but it seems to spend more time off the road with a leaking damper cartridge than it does on the road.

    Wondering the same thing. Also what are your advices? Should i order the disc or the ultra?

    New badboy owner

    Hi Guys,

    Just joined this forum with the premise of being associated with other Badboy owners! Judging by the posts you guys seem to be diehard fans. Good to know.

    Got mine about a month ago.

    Had a Rockhopper for around 10 years which I bought 2nd hand off a mate which cost me zilch! Rode the pants of it, chopped the bars down and put some fatboys on it. Loved it to death! Unfortutantely it got pinched whilst in Hackney a month a go.

    I was gutted (more sentiment than anything else) and 6 hours without a bike was sending mad lol. I needed to get the thing serviced and judging by the amount miles I done after the last one I think it would have costed more than the bike was worth. So be it - it was taken from me so it was time to move on.

    Was considering a Trek 7 or a Scott. I had heard about the Badboys (mainly lefty's) from friends but didn't pay them much attention. I wasn't that much into them when they come out. I saw a lot of couriers using them. After modifying my Rockhopper I got caught up in the hybrid world. The 700 just looked like a beast! I had to get it!

    I still can't believe how light the thing is! Rode it to Richmond and back without any complaints. Well worth the money!

    A couple of things I thought were bit pants. Manly cheap components.

    I the stem fastening bolt snapped while I was tightening it and the grips have started to unravel. Also wasn't that happy with Evans's construction efforts with the bike. It took them 3 attempts to get it right. But apart from that everything else about the bike is just great!

    Any recommendations/changes for a BB 700 newbie?

    Buy a pair or Ergon GC3 grips, maybe change the rear mech to an X-9 Long Cage, apart from that I would leave it alone.

    What psi are you running on the rear tire? I did run 700x35 panaracer cinder, it fits the frame but rubbing on 40+ psi. I also run 700x32 kenda kwicker. Better but still rub the frame on 55+ psi. Small stone get stuck on the tire knobs and since there's not a lot of clearance between the frame and tire, it get wedge in and fling it. End up with a scrape on the frame.

    Did you even try running your cx comp on gravel road, how's the clearance on mud? and what psi are you running? the skinnier the tire the higher the psi needs to prevent pinch flat.

    Right now I have the slicks on but I used the Cx Comp last winter, pressure was around 6 bar = 87 psi and I had no problems. I bought the Cx mainly for surviving the winter in my city and they performed very well driving on snow. I have not used them on gravel roads extensively, but as far as I have done so it was no problem as long as they were in rather dry condition...

    Mine regularly sees limestone/cinder rail-grade trails with the 700's. I also have a xc wheelset I swap out to bust some singletrack from time to time.

    What's the deal with that front shock on the Ultra; is it any good and does it raise the handlebar height significantly?

    If it wasn't becuase I'm unsure about how tall the front of the Ultra will be, i would go for it, for sure. No bike quite like it, really.

    Its a great bike when the fork works properly, I am having leaking air pressure at the moment after having to sort the damper cartridge. Height wise, a little perhaps.

    I actually got the chunky Badboy grips in the end. They are sooooo much better than the rubbish tennis racket ends that they stick on when you buy the bike. What's the point Cannondale???

    Cannondale should just stick to supplying the frame, forks and wheels on BB's. The other bits they supply are pretty rubbish and will need replacing after a few days out.

    Got a Cateye Vectra Cycle Computer while I was browsing too. Might consider a Hope quick release seat lock too.

    2009 Bbu



    Few weeks old. I'm really having a lot of fun with this bike. The only thing that bugs me is the tire clearance. I ride some hard gravel based bike path. I have a set of 700 x 30 Kenda Kwicks coming tomorrow. I'll let you guys know how they fit.

    New BBU owner here. Anybody out there try putting 650B wheel and tire combo on their BB? Just wondering if this could be a good alternative to getting the 26inch mtn wheel and tire. Any advice is appreciated.

    If anyone's interested, I managed to fit a set of Kenda Kwick 700 x 30c cx tires on the bike-



    I had to remove the original metal valve cap and modify a plastic one by sanding the end flat in order to gain enough clearance. As you can see in the photo its close but its not rubbing at all. Also, I over inflated the tire to 100 pounds just to see if the added pressure would cause it to hit and it seems fine.

    Thanks for the post. Mine is the base BB so I don't have to worry about the front clearance. Am getting a set of the Conti Sport Contact from the same place, but in 32's. Will see how that would work.

    I was inches away from getting a Cannondale CX9 yesterday then I stumbled on the Bad Boy. I'm after a bike for commuting, but I want something fast. Coming from an MTB background. Looking at the 2010 700 BB but the 700 Ultra is also tempting.

    Does anyone have any opinions on what I'd be best with? Stick with the CX9 or go for Bad Boy? Then 700 or 700 Ultra? Commute is only 3 miles each way, mostly lanes. Any advice appreciated!

    Have you tried riding both? Which one felt better for you? Slightly different bikes. I suggest really to ride them and determine which fit your riding style. If both feel good then consider Bad Boy for it's awesome versatility (the ability to transform into a mountain bike, commuter, road and some touring). I got a 2009 Bad Boy Ultra and have sold my F7 and Synapse bikes and have not looked back yet. Good luck. Ride on !!!

    I'm going to struggle to even sit on either on them prior to ordering. Where I live bikes like these aren't carried as stock so have to be ordered in. Obviously I'll be able to try it before signing, but I can't expect the bike shop to order in every bike I fancy!

    It's the versatility that appeals. I want I workhorse. Had enough of abusing my MTB riding it around to work all the time and the shops etc. I was tempted by a road type bike but don't really fancy drop bars. Plus the Bad Boy looks cool!!

    Seem to be a few people having problems with the headshocks though.

    I have had nothing but a leaking headshok with my Ultra. You would have trouble free cycling with the 700c but with the ultra... uhmm!

    For the amount of money I'll be spending I'd expect a good few years of "trouble free" riding! Think I'll keep it simple.

    Now, I've spoke to my LBS today, they can get me a 2010 700 by November for £899, OR a 2009 700 for £700. Any opinions on which would be best? The 2010 seems to be more geared towards commuting?

    the gearing on the 2010 is better, 2 rings, I personally don't like the shimano stuff or the tektro brakes. good frame though....

    Anyone know if it's possible to fit the crud roadracer mudguards onto the bad boy? Seem to be the best looking mudguards and won't ruin the look of the bb.
