How do you all like that RST Deuce that is on the Trail SL 29ers? I'm getting the 2012 SL4 and I'm curious what people think of that fork.

I wish I could be more help to you, but I don't have anything to compare it to. This is my first decent mtb I've owned (owned a Schwinn Criss Cross in college).
That being said, I do like the ability to lock out and there are settings in between full lockout and softest ride.

I'm comparing the deuce to a walmart fork so really it's like night and day to me. BUT after a month on this bike I can tell the fork will be upgraded at some point to a 100mm air fork. Simply for the fact that it's kinda noisy. Plus slightly more travel wouldn't be bad. I ride hard. Other than the noise, which I don't really notice anymore, it seems to be just fine.

I was commenting on someones post, who did upgrade theirs. Mine isn't upgraded yet, though I too would like to do some upgrading over the winter. I don't know any specs on the bike and can't find a list of specs online anywhere. Someday I'll have to stop buy and get the specs from the LBS where I purchased it. I'm pretty sure it's a 9mm hub, but don't quote me on that. I know it's not 20, and doubtful it's 15. My biggest problem is gonna be finding a fork that has a 1.5 steerer that's not tapered. I don't want to mess around with headset adapters and a new stem if I can avoid it.

Anyone know what the SL frames are rated for? Comes with a 80mm fork, but I'd like to get a 120, or 100 at least!

Another Trail SL3...its been upgraded because I cant leave things stock for long.
    New:
    Niner Carbon tapered fork
    Cane Creek 40 headset
    SLX crank w/ ext BB
    Niner 32T chainring
    Niner 20T cog
    No Tubes ZTR Arch wheelset

I've got so much to learn. I was not aware you could convert to an external BB. I assume thats what the ext is short for? What size BB is it? I'm 99% sure the SL4 has the exact same frame.

Yes, ext was short for external BB. I got the crank/BB from JensonUSA. It fits both 68/73 shells and comes with the shims (if needed). But be careful, the one I purchased was for a 10speed which is a thinner chain than 9spd (I didn't care bc I was putting a SS chainring and chain on).... and the SL4 is not exactly the same frame bc my bike has a larger shell to fit an EBB (which holds the ext BB) to tighten the chain.

    Hopefully I didnt confuse you...

How much difference does the Niner fork make? I've been thinking of swapping the stock Fatty fork for a Niner fork on my SL3.

Best purchase/most noticeable improvement (and it has only been on the bike for a week) I've done to the bike...and I have changed everything. What I really liked about their fork is that it has a tapered steerer as an option...at least you can still retain the 1 1/2" at the crown.

    2011 Flash 29er 1 Alloy

Stock setup other than Crank Bros pedals and Ergon grips. Will be upgrading my wheelset this year once I decide on what I want to go with. Would love some feeback about hubs. Currently considering Industry Nine hubs and Stan's Arch 29er rims, but I'm open for suggestions on other options. I'm 6'2" and 185 lbs. Ride mostly cross-country single-track in Utah and Idaho.

I would love to own a 29er bit since I'm in Illinois there aren't many places to ride where the terrain would favor such a set up. My Bad Boy with 700mm XC tires does great on the trails here and the gearing is a better set up for flat rolling terrain, I think. Swapping to 26 inch tires can help on the rougher trails too. Having said that I still desire a 29er. Someone talk some sense into me that it would be overkill. I feel like I'm going to have a garage full of bikes before too long.

29 is better on rough stuff as far as I'm concerned. If you have 700c and the bike does well, why spend the $$? I switched from a 20 year old Cannondale with 26" wheels to the 5 year old Caffeine(above...came WITH the stuff mentioned plus shoes, a helmet, and mini pump). Net after sale of my old Cannondale: $600.

Tim, what's your experience in the ride differences on your 29er vs your bad boy with the 700x38 tires? I know the suspension travel is a huge difference, but in terms of speed and ride quality what is your take?

That is a true apples/oranges comparison. I love both bikes, and really the only downside to the flash so far is getting used to all the features of it. My bad boy is so stripped down that this bike is taking some getting used to.

As far as terrain, i mostly stuck to hike and bike type trails on the bad boy, the flash is overkill for that. I have been taking the flash out to my local trails and riding stuff that I would not have considered for the bad boy. Big drops, high speed, pump track, etc..

One this I am surprised by is how nimble the flash is. I am able to manual with it similar to my bmx bike which i would not have thought was possible. It rolls over stuff like a monster truck, but doesn't handle like a monster truck.

Thats good to hear as I was under the impression that 29ers were at a a disadvantage when it comes to tight maneuvers. I appreciate everyones feed back. I think I'll stick with my current stable of bikes for now.

Tight woods trails here. No problem at all switching from 26 to 29. Will put up a video to show how tight in a few days. Those out west don't know what tight is
