    New Lefty-ied 2011 Epic

    I posted this over in the Specialized forum, but I wanted to post this where the Cannondale crowd could see it too, since it was the folks on this forum that inspired me to go with a Lefty for this build.

    Thanks to MendonCycleSmith for doing the 29er conversion on the fork, and also a big thanks to Jake at Project 321. This is the first 142mm rear hub that Project 321 has sold, and Jake went to extra lengths to get the axle in and make sure that everything would work, and he spent a ridiculous amount of time on the phone with me sorting through the options for the fork and wheels. The Project 321 wheels are absolutely beautiful - I couldn't be happier with how they turned out. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to take the bike our for a real ride yet, so no ride report at this time.

    Oh - and pardon the rear brake line routing. The hose wasn't long enough to run under the down tube, so it is taped to the top tube temporarily so that I could at least take the bike out for a test ride on the pavement.

    If the Specialized guys slag him they are crazy cause bottom line, thats a nice bike, don't care how you slice it. Coincidence that the color green is way similar to new Cdales lol. Great job to all that was/is involved.

    As soon as I have some ride time on it I'll give you some feedback. I'm not sure that I would rate the 142mm axle any more convenient than a qr for putting the wheel on, although I do like the fact that you never have to worry about whether you have the axle seated all the way in the dropouts anymore.

    Actually - everybody's that has posted has been very positive. I knew all along that the lefty is something of an acquired taste. I'm really looking forward to getting some miles in on the bike though to see how the complete package works.

    I know its a Cannondale forum but why not? Its half Cannondale

    I did the same thing. I think deep down I really want a Flash Carbon 29er but this will have to do for now.

    Welcome to the club... my Tallboy is next... and yes Jake at 321 is awesome.

    Maybe this should be the "Leftified" thread?...

    Here is my Ibis in race form... in all mountain/XC mode with regular rotors and all every day tires it is still only 22.5 lbs... The Lefty took almost a pound off my regular fork.

    Grip shift grips

    I noticed you have some nice lock on grips on there. I also run Sram x9 and I need new grips but I haven't been able to find any that are compatible with Gripshift. Where did you find those?

    This is what I'm using:

    These are the Rogue grips. ODI also makes a Ruffian style and a Yeti style in the grip shift length. Just search on ODI clamp grip shift and you should get some hits. Generally it seems to be hard to find a grip/clamp combo for the grip shift length grips, so you'll probably have to buy the ODI clamps separately. I love them - way easier to deal with than standard grips.

    Very nice! It's pretty amazing to see a bike with that amount of travel in that weight range. I'm sure it's fun to ride!

    First things first, your bike is sweet man, those hubs just top the whole bike off

    I was thinking about getting the Project 321 hubs but am concerned about the weight of the rear hub?

    The Project321 rear hub is 345grams where as the ExtraLite rear hub is only 168g.

    I've heard the the ExtraLte hubs aren't vey reliable, so I'm kinda stuck in the middle atm...

    Help!
    and no, I am not missing the other half of my fork....

    I'm glad you like the bike - I am very happy with it.

    As you can probably tell from my build, I'm not really a weight weenie, so take my answer for what its worth. From what I can tell, if you want reliable and light, I'd go with the DT Swiss 240s since they now offer a front lefty hub. If you want the best engagement, either I9 or Project 321 is going to be the winner, with King a close second (and in actuality you likely won't be able to tell the difference in engagement between King and I9). I'm guessing the ring drive on the king is probably the most reliable mechanism (strictly an opinion), but I personally think the Project 321s win for aesthetics. It sounds to me like you should probably be looking at the DT Swiss hubs.

    If you want a great balance of price and light weight, you should look at the NoTubes wheels too. Right now they are only showing the Cannondale front hub for a Lefty fork. I'd recommend giving them a call to see what wheels they could offer.

    Gripshift grips

    Turner Convert- Thanks for the info about the grips. I was able to find some online and ordered a pair for this season.

    Glad you found what you were looking for. If your experience is like mine then the grips on the shifters will wear out before the ODI grips do

    It's a medium frame. Sadly, I've only got driveway time on it so far. On the bright side though we've had some great skiing over the past couple of weeks

    What is you height? And do you have the low adapter for the lefty? Guess there will be a medium for me as well.

    I'm a little under 5' 10". I'm definitely using the lefty with the standard 138mm between the clamps, and I have the stem sitting directly on top of the upper clamp. In the pictures I have the stem set at -8 degrees (90 mm stem). I have since adjusted it to -16 degrees and I think I'm going to leave it that way for a little while. I really can't believe I don't have any real ride time on it yet but there will be lots of time for that in the future.

    They should have made an adapter for lower head tubes...to many spacers needed
    I'm only 5' 6,5" but like a racy position.
