    Need some advice

I'm looking to possibly purchase this bike (Cannondale M500 mountain) from the owner but I was wondering if the price he is asking for a fair price (He is asking $300 for it and not $325). According to the owner, all the components are original except for the front shocks. I have read these are pretty good bikes but seeing as it is around 15 years old, I wonder if the asking price is a little high. I'll admit I'm not very knowledgeable about these things so I was hoping to get some input from others who are.

The fork this one has is the older version of the Sid, a racing fork. The bike looks in very good shape, and for $300, it is a great bike for the money.

So my next question then is would I be better off buying this bike or just going to the local wal-mart or target and picking up a bike for that kind of money or less? I'll be using it mainly to commute to class but I also want to do a some trail riding (nothing hardcore). I was looking at the diamondback sorrento if I were to buy a brand new bike.

For any bit or trail riding, this bike would be better than any Kmart bike. Also, the fork is better quality, and there are 8 gears on the Cannondale and only 7 on the Diamondback. There is more suspension travel on that Cannondale than on the Diamondback.

Thanks for all the help! Also, he is now asking for $275 so it looks like I'm getting a pretty good deal.
