    Lefty Install

    So I just recieved my new Lefty (Thanks tmachalek!)...

    I want to install it myself, and I've worked with this kinda stuff all my life, but there's a few questions...

    1-Removing the present headshok: I'm told a headshok is pressure fit into the headset bearings, and a rubber mallet (with proper frame support, etc etc) from the top breaks it loose and out the bottom. Yes?

    2-Installing the Lefty: It looks like the DLR cartridge must be removed from the leg, then you loosen the top clamp and take it off. Lefty (with lower bearing already on steerer) then goes in from the bottom. Top bearing is then press fit over the steerer with Cannondale tool (or PVC pipe). Yes?

    So anyway...

    I figured it out for myself, but I'll answer my own questions here for the benefit of any future searchers.

    Yes indeed. I bought a $6 rubber mallet, and gently smacked it from the top. A few good square hits, and out the old fork fell.

    I was right here too, but I had to call my LBS to find out how to remove the "cartridge". FYI, it's not the cartridge that gets removed, just a retaining ring. It comes off with either a 40mm hex or a green Park pin spanner, and easily. Take that off, and then loosen the top clamp bolts and slide it off from the top.

    Lefty goes in from the bottom, and the lower bearing seats tightly in the lower cup. a PVC pipe over the top of the steerer tapped with the mallet seated everything easily. Return the top clamp to it's home, and tighten. Put on stem. Done.

    Easy.

    I paid about the going rate on Ebay

    So here it is...for having bought the Lefty on last Friday night, receiving it Wed, ordering the hub on Tues, and getting THAT this morning...I think I put this thing together pretty quick! (I got the wheel built in 2 hours! And it was only the second wheel I've ever built!)





    I was bound and determined to get it ready for 2 rides this weekend, and I did

    I also had no idea how much I was missing with the stupid Super Fatty M that came stock on the Jekyll 500. That thing is junk.

    Hey!!! set yourself up a nice rig......
    Is that a Syntace VRO stem jacked up to it's full capacity??
    Also what model rear derailleur do you have installed??

    Nope. Just the stock 100x20. There was a VRO on Ebay I almost snagged the other day, tho.

    That, my friend, is the chain tensioner for the Rohloff!

    (p.s. If I have hub troubles on either end and need quick replacements, I'm screwed!)

    history of this Lefty

    FYI:
    The history of this fork is as follows:
    I decided that I wanted a new bike one day while I was at my uncles house. His wife said her parents are neighbors with a Cannondale worker. Well.. we got in touch with the worker and had him order 2 2004 Cannondale Scalpels for us. One was for me and one was for my bro. I kept the gold/black one because it is a great bike and we decided to sell the other one because it was too big for my brother. Well we put it up on ebay for 1400 with a buy it now of 2100 and it got snatched up fast by tmachalek. He said he wanted it because he broke his old scalpel frame and needed a new one. From what I see here, I'm guessing tmachalek kept the frame and sold off all the other parts. From the looks of it, direktor has gotten a great fork direct from the factory in Bedford, PA.

    I thought it would be interesting to provide some information.

    Yes you're right...I parted out most of the parts from the scalpel as i really needed the frame as my previous frame cracked under no warranty.
    Unfortunatly i still have the lefty sitting around @ home thanks to the UPS soccer team (damaged spindle) Director received his lefty from my roomate who has a few friends on the now defunct Sobe team...Lucky him!!
