    Hollowgram SL question!!

I've got a Hollowgram SL Crank with a 39/26 chainrings. What are my options for going with a 24 or 22 in place of the 26??

Change the spider for one that can use such a small chainring. I think a 22 would require you use a spider for triple chainring setups... (there were some for the standard 4 bolt rings and older ones for 5 bolts rings).

Dan, the crank is off a 2012 Scalpel. I thought I could just go with new chainrings. Is that not the case?

Not if it has a SRAM XX specific spider (which your gearing leads me to believe, correct me if I'm wrong). I think you already have the smallest chainrings that the XX bolt pattern will allow. Thanks for introducing a new bolt pattern every 6 months SRAM! But then again, with 11-36 cassettes, very few people need chainrings smaller than what you already have.

It is XX. For all my riding I don't need anything lower than 26x34. However for the LT100, I'd love a 22/24 x 36 for Columbine and Powerline. Two sustained climbs with pitches of 18-24 degrees in sections.

    Hollowgram SL question!!-104-64-bcd-crank-2013-04-06-002.jpg

Dan is right. 26 teeth is the smallest gear you can get on the 120mm/80mm spider, notwithstanding some boutique machine shops that custom machine 25 tooth rings. A better alternative is to switch the spider. My 2013 Scalpel came OEM stock with a 2X10, 120mm/80mm BCD spider and 39-26 gears on the chain rings. I swapped it for Bash-38-24 chain ring set up, using the Cannondale 3X9-10 spider with 104mm/64mm BCD. It is a little skinny on the small ring chainline, but works great. Shifting is flawless. The outcome is a much more functional trail bike. I gained two extra gears on the low end for climbing. Cannondale also has a new 104mm/64mm 2X10 specific spider (no third ring mounting location) you can get from CannondaleExperts for $130. It's also worth noting that Cannondale switched the late year 2013 F-29's over to 38-24 on the smaller spider from 39-26, so maybe they'll move away from the 120mm/80mm spider in 2014.

Hey LyncStar, just wondering what option did you go for (if any) in the end? I'm on the same boat as you are, looking for options to get a slightly smaller chainring on my 2012 Scalpel (Hollowgram SISL2, I think I was lucky to get this newer version).

    Thanks!
