FSA BB30 cranks - sideways movement

    Hi All,

Cleaning the bike and noticed the cranks on my Flash 29er have 5-10mm sideways movement. I can't see what has changed and there doesn't appear to be any missing or loose parts.

Any ideas on what to look for or what to check?

You might make sure your bb has the correct spacers each frame is different.

Check the pre-load ring hasn't spun loose.

I noticed the same thing on mine after the first ride. I took it back to the lbs and they added 3 clear plastic-like spacers on the non drive side of the crank and it fixed the problem. They did say that some frames need the spacers and some don't. I still find that odd. Now after a few 100 miles or so my bb is making some loud creaking/cracking noises and it does not spin freely. I've had a few people look at it and they told me my bearings where shot. I took it apart and there was quit a bit of dirt in the bb and around the bearings. Im just wondering if the spacers are causing more dirt to get into the bb.

    Check FSA crank installation instruction:
you use 2.5mm spacers only if you have 68mm BB. Cannondale have both 68 and 73mm BBs.
The reason for sideway moves can be that preload nut is loosen or you are missing preload nut screw (check the link above).

After pulling it apart at the LBS, found the spacer on the drive side missing. (it is clearly mentioned in the FSA documentation).

Have had the bike 18 months with no problem previously so can only guess that the spacer has some how parted ways.

Fitted new spacer - all good again

Also interesting to note, in 18 months have changed bearings three times. The cranks spin wonderfully well compared to external BB, but go through bearings at a rate of knots.

Mine also developed play took it to the Lbs and they fixed it said it was the preload nut back off the screw wasn't tight enough
