Flash 29 Carbon looses battle with 24 Hour Race

I partnered with a team mate for a 24 hour duo this weekend. He was riding C'dale Flash 29 Carbon. We were alternating 2 laps a peice on a 11 mile course. Not even midway through the race he noticed something wrong during his lap. Thought it was odd handling due to a low tire he had repaired. After returning to the pits and further inspection he found the seat tube of frame broke clean through. Luckily we had spare bikes available and we still managed to take the win in the 24 hour duo category but he's not a happy camper. It took him forever to get the frame and it has only a handul of cross country rides on it. We live in the midwest with nothing super aggressive. Mostly rocky rooty trails.

We suspect it started in the front after noticing the bottle cage came loose. Now it's too hard to tell as it's broke straight through.

Yep, seat tube, I didn't look real close at it, as I was worrying about my own race related details, but it seems they may have an issue where the seat tube changes shape as you head towards the bottom bracket.

That's my frame. Calfee said, after the repair it's better than before. I don't doubt that. Just didn't want to wait for the repair, since I had a couple races left and had to get a replacement fast.
For racing, I think the Flash is on the same level as the Niner Air9, love how both bikes handle.

At least the cage is keeping it together, some duct tape on that and it will be as good as new.

I've raced/ridden my Orbea Alma 29er for three years now and haven't had a squeak out of the thing... Maybe it's the uber-shaped downtube that's taking the load off the seat and top tube, but it's solid AND light... Just saying!

They (Flash, Vertex) still have a long way to go before they catch Gary Fishers, the Snap, Crackle and Pop champions by a loooooooooong shot!

The difference is G.F. or Trek will have you a new frame within a couple weeks time. Cannondale's response. They have none and don't know when they will be able to replace it. In their defense the rep. did give the owner a Scalpel to use in the time being but it is nowhere near the bike build that the Flash was.

Maybe, I knew two guys years ago that broke aluminum Fishers and waited months to get their replacement. Bikes break, companies screw up... I'd take my chances with a Cannondale or Scott before the other companies mentioned.
