    First buy

Is $400 a good price for a Cannondale Super V 500 SL. Yellow frame with red decals. Black forks. I think it's made in 1999. The seller stated bike bought in '03. What should a first time buyer test before purchasing a used full-suspension mountain bike?

    Thanks,

Looks mint but seems like too much for a bike that old.

From the one pic it looks decent. I'd offer $275. Top out at $300. Look for dents and inspect the welds for rust, especially around the crank. Be prepared to spend $50 on new cables/housing and possible a new chain if its been sitting around awhile. on a test ride listen for frame fatigue. If it "creaks" during moderate acceleration then the frame is fatigued and may not last too much longer unless you plan on only casual use.

Aluminum doesn't rust. I agree to inspect the welds but I would be looking for cracks.

$400 for a 1999 bike???? It might be older..My 1998 cannondale F900 had a lockout twist knob for the shock. That one doesn't look like it has one. JMO

Its a 99 for sure. I can tell by the shock mount on the rear triangle. If you get it, it will be really easy to make it an uber v.

    Good job! Bought it!!!!

    All,

Thanks for all the input. I bought the bike for 400 and cannot stay off it. I took it to the Durst bike shop, purchase place, and they stated bike was well taken care of; nothing required but cardio Bike eats grass!!! Researching Illinois DNR for trails to conquer.

Congrats, that was a good score. It has a lot of potential (see "Uber V" thread).
