    The Creaking Prophet

I have a 05 Prophet 800. Ever since I've had this bike it's only a matter of time until this annoying ceark comes out of nowhere and starts annoying the crap out of me. Usually I take it apart and grease the chainrings, pedals, bottom bracket, pivot points, and seatpost. I didn't do the seatpost last time, but dont' really think that is where the sound is coming from. I noticed that if I'm holding my bike almost vertical to the ground and put my foot on the middle of it and flex it sideways it creaks. I'm really unsure what this is, but have noticed there have been a bunch of people I've seen post about the Prophet having some noise issues. I'd like to see what people have run into it being and how they have overcome it.

One of my friends talked to me about using a different kind of lube for the cups on the bottom bracket and the frame. He was saying that sometimes when there is two aluminum parts touching that they can make more noise than normally. I also read a post where a guy mentioned his bearings on the pivot point needed changed. I have never done anything like that. I push grease into them when I lube everything up but other than that nothing.

I normally use this: The Creaking Prophet-cm400b00_____3.jpg

My Rush did that all the time and it drove me insane (along with the self destructing Lefty).

I stripped the bike right down, cleaned and greased until I was blue in the face.

In the end I took it to the shop and they couldn't find the source either and that resulted in Cannondale offering to warranty the frame (I did not want anything but a single pivot bike, and the Rush was no longer made). Anyway, I was advised to take it home and "See if the creak disappeared."

I poured some utter hate into the bike while riding it - and in the end the creak disappeared. For all I know, some of the copious lube the shop put everywhere worked its way in to the source and killed it.

Could be a frame crack for all I know, but I cannot see any.

It's funny, I knew Sideknob would mention his Lefty, I'm actually surprised he didn't say that it was the source of the creak

You might try pulling the bearings and greasing them before reinstallation, since you haven't pulled them yet. They might warrant replacing too since you have them out.

All shock hardware is greased, I'll assume.

Pulled the BB and greased threads, cups, washers, interfaces etc?

Phil's is good stuff, no worries there....

I have a silent '05 Prophet. The Lefty Max 140 TPC has been a quiet, consistent source of front suspension heaven. If you have issues with a Lefty, it's operator error.
My name is Chris and I ride a Prophet 650b with a Lefty.

Remove the swing arm from the frame,
plug the hole in the hotbox area with some duct tape,
then spray a $hitload of this stuff:

White Lithium Grease Spray | Lithium Grease, Lubricant | WD-40 Specialist

into the swingarm through the little holes near the dropout while you hold it vertically.
Let it sit like that overnight, and you will see that the creaking will disappear!
This is the "Official" cannondale recommendation for creaky Rush and Prophet swingarms btw. if everything else mentioned by the others here fails.
Worked great on my creaky 2007 Prophet replacement(!) swingarm...

No the Lefty doesn't creak at all.

    Just clunks.

    And leaks.

Mine creaks as well! Been through a few fixes, but it always comes back! First time was a the derailer cable housing at the last cable stop before entering the swingarm. Then it was loose pedals, then it was a loose crank, another time it was the pivot bolt being loose, once it was the shock mounting bolts being loose, dirt caught between the rubber grommets in the swimgarm creaking against the cable housing...and probably a few things I'm forgetting. Just clean up everywhere surfaces contact each other and move, grease, lube, dry, tighten EVERYTHING! Or swap parts! Switching from the stock FSA cranks to some "new" 1998 CODA tarantula cranks with some swanky raceface rings did the trick for a month! And then the creak came back! yaaaaaay. But I digress, I've just learned to live with it as a motivator to keep the bike clean and tightened up. It rides far too well for me to care about a lil noise anymore!
