    Chain skip

Got an issue with an old Super V, it has an 8 speed 11-30 cassette with an XTR rear derailleur, when I start to climb an start changing into the 3 lower gears my chain skips when I apply hard pressure, not sure of the problem as my derailleur is adjusted properly, I'm thinking my cassette is getting worn but I"m no bike mechanic, any ideal on what would cause this, figure its got to be the cassette or chain or both, second question will any of the 8 speed 11-30 or 11-32 cassettes work if I need to replace it? Thanks

This is something you might want to ask in the drivetrain forum....anyways, sounds like your drivetrain is due for an overhaul.
I had a similar issue and it was only a worn chainring in the front.
Cheapest way is to replace it first then see how it goes.
Every bikeshop should have a measuring device to see if the chain is worn.
Replacing both, chain and cassette at the same time is always recommended, better yet chainring, cassette and chain at the same time to be on the safe side.
Any of the 8speed cassettes should work just fine, make sure it's Shimano/Sram compatible so it will fit onto your existing hub/ freewheel body.

Buy yourself a cheep chain checker and see how much wear you have.

If its never been done worth changing both, fairly cheep fix, sram and shimano chains / cassettes worth together.

well I replaced the cassette with a 11-32 an a new chain an fixed the problem, plus the 32 makes climbing a little easier for me. All is good now. Thanks
