Cannondale Rize is this a crack?

Is this a crack in the chain stay or just paint?

Yep, it's a crack. Are you the original owner?

it is 6061-T6 aluminum. It can be welded, but then you will have a very weak area around the weld called the Heat Affected Zone. If you decide to have it repaired, you will need to have it welded and then fully heat treated to bring it back up to T6 temper. This can be done. I did it with an old Jekyll over 2 years ago.

I had mine done at a place called Industrial Heat Treating. Catchy name. The frame (or swing arm) needs to be stripped of all components and screws. Don't worry about the paint, it will all burn off. They heat it to 1,050 degrees which puts the aluminum alloy into a particular molecular structure that gives it great strength and then they quench it by dunking it into a tank of anti freeze. This locks the alloy in this state which is now T4 temper. It then needs to be baked at 400 degrees for 4 hours to bring it up to T6. If it is done right, it can be as good or in your case better than new. Good luck.

Thanks that excellent reply and resources. Hopefully the original owner has luck with Cannondale.

Or you simply buy a new swingarm before they don't have them in stock anymore.

I have a 2010 RZ 140, does it have the same chain stay? Are all models of the RZ / Rize swing arms made of aluminum or do some have carbon?

OP - Good luck with the warranty! good to know about the welding heat treating process!

A new and improved swingarm arrived w/ the switch the "RZ" name. It lacks the propensity to crack like the Rize swingarm. From what I've seen, it seems it is basically just a matter of when, not if, the Rize arm will fail.

I have an old R300 Cannondale road bike with a crack on the chainstay that runs lengthwise. Is that bad? Can I still ride the bike?
