    Looking great fatboyslimfast.

    I ripped my headshok apart and it is pretty much shite. I am goint to see about having it serviced when I get back to the states.

    I just picked up a Marzocchi MX Coil 85 to replace it. So we will see how that works out in a week or so.

    The frame and rear triangle were sprayed by a couple of guys at the bodyshop where I work. You can't see it in the picture but the silver is the same paint used on car alloy wheels - in the sun it glitters and shimmys like a good 'un. The rear triangle is Volkswagon metallic black - there was an '04 Golf GTi in the shop and I asked for the same colour. It almost looks like a team replica. The decals were off a guy on e-bay, I'm keeping my eye out for some genuine Cannondale decales to finish the job.

    WOW it is great to find this post. I have a 1999 super v 500. It was my first mountain bike and I recently bought a 1999 GT lts 2000ds and now I don't know which I like better. My headshok and rear shock need to be serviced on the V.

    The latest incarnation of my 1999 SV900. I have added 8" Avid mechanical discs, Ritchey V3 Comp pedals, a new Mavic 317 front rim that I laced to a BBB hub myself and an Intense 2.35 front tire.

    Here's my '99 SV 1000, recently brought back to life with an older style yet otherwise new Hollowtech OctaLink XT crank setup (it's getting harder to find replacement square taper brackets these days), SRAM Rocket triggers (I think I'm formally done with twist shifters now) and the Magura HeadShok cartridge upgrade (I paid for 80MM of travel, now I finally have it). Oh, and pardon me if placement of the bike was a gratuitous attempt to also include the Mille. Wait, maybe even mentioning the Mille was gratuitous.

    Wanna swap

    I've just broken my frame however.
    The thin strut from the seat downtube to the left side of the swingarm pivot has broken just above where it's welded to the swingarm bracket.
    Just need to get around to getting it fixed.

    No dice, Bro

    Finally got it to about 100% the last thing is to upgrade the rear caliper brake.

    The latest upgrade was a Marzzochi MX Comp Coil 85. I was worried about the geometry so went with the 85. With the new suspension this bike is like a pogo stick compared to how it was riding a month ago. I have everything pretty stiff becasue I am riding mostly XC and Urban Freeride but I can get an extra 8 inches vert from a standstill.

    I recently decided to beat the hell out of it and took a 6 foot drop with no transition and it faired pretty well with the exception I did something to the bottom bracket so I pulled it all out and put it back together and all is fine.

    The 99 SV was a unique animal. The shock mounting tabs were moved forward 3/4" to accomodate the SL swingarm with a 6" I2I shock (Fox Vanilla usually). You can tell them from other incarnations by the size of the tabs and how far the tabs are from the seatpost braces. If you can find a Jekyll swingarm, some Super V adapters (which to mount a standard fork because the crown height of a lefty is not high enough), and a 7.5" I2I stable platform shock. You can potentially have a 6" rear travel trail bike.

    With these few upgardes (roughly $400/500) you can have a bike with roughly the same geometry as a Prophet set in the FR settings. The swingarm is stiffer then the Prophet as it is behind the BB (less span), it will have a very consistent rate of suspension (as compared to the Prophet which has a falling rate at the end of the shock stroke because the shock mount is on the down tube and more inline), and the arc of the swigarm is tighter then the Prophet making it more efficient. It will for the most part except modern parts, will weigh in theory less then 30lbs, and in my opine be a potentially awesome trail bike.

    JDCamb is on to something I tried last year withouy much luck. I think I must have an older frame because when I tried to fit a secondhand Jekyll swingarm the i2i was about 200mm, for too big. Instead I had to plumb for a stock arm. It is something I'm still keen to try though.

    Dude I know I am on to something . If I could only find one those 99 short tab frames......
    Here is another shot of our third experimment. It rides awesome and it is a feather considering the parts spec. Solid feel super efficient climber. Nobody can believe the frame was made in 1997. The performance of the PS fifth element is just amazing. We had to turned up the valving to 3 : 1 to get the rebound into range on a couple of the frames. Anyone who rides it wants one. PM me for info....

    Super V still a favourite

    Heres my Super V 1000SL. I bought it new in the UK. Some minor changes to it - Race Face post, Monkey risers, flat pedals (alternating between a set of XT SPD's). Love this bike for general XC stuff. I was going to sell it when I got the Prophet but have come to realise that there is probably room for both bikes (parting with the V started to get tough when it came down to it!).

    Hearing all this great hop ups make me want to keep my super v. I currently have a GT lts 2000ds as my main FS bike but I still love the super v. I am not totally understanding what is different about the 99 frames. Is it the supports that are bumped out that go from the seat v to the frame? Please explain.....thank you.


    Also can we see the other experiments? Please..........

    I understand now.......ooooops........that is a big difference in the shock tab length.

    I've put together several combinations with Super V frames but this is definitely my favorite:
    1999 Super V Front (short tab)
    2004 Jekyll Swingarm
    7.5" x 2" Progressive 5th Element Air
    Fox Talas RLC Fork

    Gets over 6 inches rear wheel travel and still climbs anything without a hint of pedal feedback thanks to the 5th Element. The fork is installed with Cannondale Super V headtube adapters and a Chris King headset. It has perfect trailbike geometry.

    I've owned an Ellsworth ID and several other Cannondales but this is easily the best trailbike I've ever ridden. Might not be pretty, but it rocks.

    Just curious what the travel of the fork is?

    I must admit the thought of 6" of rear travel has my attention.

    The original configuration of the 99 Super V was out of balance IMHO with 120mm rear travel and 80mm in the front.

    To those that have ridden this setup, what do you think the ideal fork travel would be?

    You won't realize how nice more travel is until you try it. I never thought I needed 6 inches
    but I keep managing to use it all...

    I have not ridden an original Super V. I began experimenting with Super V frames
    because I had a 2001 Jekyll and wanted a modern platform shock. First I tried the Raven II
    with a Romic. When I broke the Raven C'dale gave me a Super V. I got a 5th Element Air
    and never rode the Romic again. That combination gave me 4.5" with a modern Jekyll
    swingarm. Eventually I tried the newer 135mm Jekyll with a Swinger shock but it just
    doesn't compare to the 5th element so I sold it. I just recently discovered the short-tab '99
    frames that allow the use of a longer shock with a modern swingarm. I believe I have
    found my perfect trailbike. Any '97 or newer Super V frame could be modified to shorten
    the tabs. I haven't tried it yet but it seems like it would be pretty easy with a drill and
    some dremel work. I'd like to know if anyone has tried it.

    The fork is a 125mm Talas. It's a pretty good match to the 5th air, especially given the
    upright riding postion and rearward bias of the bike. I also plan to try my Z1 FR SL for a
    bit slacker geometry. The Z1 is an inch taller. By using the Super V headtube adapters,
    you have some flexibility in geometry - steeper with the 1" cone on top, slacker with it on
    the bottom.

    The swingarms are still available through your Cannondale dealer. I've also found them here and on eBay. You can use any Jekyll/Raven/SuperV swingarm made since 2000 with the same results. Look for the ones with the furthest offset rear shock mount. I prefer the newer Jekyll models for strength and tire clearance even though they're a bit heavier. I've broken a couple CAAD4 versions over the years.

    5th element shocks also show up here and on eBay. Of course you can always order the 5ths and mounting hardware through your LBS.

    As for previous projects, here's a pic of the first 5th element Super V I put together. It gets a FULL 4.5" of travel (feels like more). I loaned this one to jdcamb for a while last year. It wasn't long before we were building his Daisy. If you want to see Daisy, look up his post in this thread from about a month ago. We have also put together a Raven II with a 6.5x1.5 5th air and a CAAD4 swingarm with good results.

    What kind of air pressure are you running in the 5th Air? And what other adjustments have you made to get it right?

    I am a big guy 6'5" @ 270lbs and want to make sure the shock can handle my hulking girth. My present setup with the Manitou 4-Way Swinger actually does a fine job (2 years with no problems), but I am at near maximum settings.

    I am currently running a Manitou Minute 1:00 fork which is about equal to the stock ride height when at the 100mm travel setting, but this sounds like it will even me out at more like the 130mm setting which would be great.

    Wow - a true clydesdale! I do believe that you are on the right bike for the job. They just don't make them as strong and stiff as the Super V anymore.

    I weigh in at about 200 dressed to ride.
    On the 4.5" travel Super V, I run 160 in the main air spring and 80 on the IFP (SPV) side for about 28% sag. It's a 6.5" i2i shock.
    On the 6" travel Super V, I run about 145 MAS / 90 IFP for about 30% sag. It's the 7.5" i2i shock.

    I'm not sure what the maximum MAS pressures are but you can call Progressive to find out if it will work for you. They will also tune the shock for you if you need such high pressure that you are out of the range of the rebound adjustment. As per your hulking girth, Progressive assures me that the shock can handle anything that I can do to it. But for what that's worth, I have broken one and I do keep backups of each. Their customer service has been great though.

    As for geometry, I am definitely running a bit slacker. I believe that your crown height is 505mm at full travel. Also it looks like your headset has a pretty low stack height. The way I run my headtube adapters (with the cone below), I get about 520mm crown height at full travel. Plus the height of the CK headset. So if an inch equals a degree of headtube angle, my setup is more than a half a degree slacker. I feel pretty good there and wouldn't want to go any steeper.

    First cut experiment - 1998 Super V with 6 inches travel

    A buddy of mine got busy last night and cut and drilled the forward shock mount on his 1998 to fit a 7.875x2 Fifth Element with a new Jekyll swingarm. Given the length of the shock, he had to drill the new shock mount as far forward as possible. Even so, this results in the swingarm getting pushed back a bit further than normal so he used headtube adapters and a tall fork to compensate. It makes for a 14.5" BB height which can have its advantages. It gets about 150mm in back and 130mm up front with pretty good trailbike geometry.

    The 7.5x2 fifth would be a better choice for the job but he already had the longer shock on hand. If you use a 7.5", you don't need to drill so far forward and geometry is not affected which allows more flexibility in the fork set-up. Let me know if you're thinking about doing a conversion and I can tell you what we've learned. If you have a '99 with the shorter tabs, frame modification is not required to use a 7.5" shock with a jekyll swingarm.

    So here's the status so far. I am waiting on Lefty 140 TPC titanium, and a 7.5/2" 5th Element. The front wheel will match the rear at that point. Doesn't that place holder fork look perfect on there?= As it sits, 27.25 lbs on my Ultimate Support digital. Wheeee!

    Mendon, is that a 99? The shock tabs look like the larger ones.

    Anyways, keep us up to date. I want to see that thing when it's finished.

    What kind of crown height does the Lefty have?

    Hi Jeff, it's a late model year '97, so it has a '98 sticker kit, and build, but the guy bought it in December of 97. You know how that model year stuff goes! jdcamb, a Lefty 140 fully corrected for bearing migration is 520mm, mine on my Prophet is currently at about 510, but I have not reset it in a bit. My 5th should be here today, I can't believe I need to wait till mid February to really ride this thing, silly lefty delays!

    to answer your question, the tabs are large now but Mendon is planning on doing some drill and dremel work

    super V 800

    When I had the Cannondale Super V 800 - it was a blast to ride. Never had any real problems with it - in it's original state. Was never really happy with any of the tires I placed on it. But, for some reason, I wanted a heavier-weight oil, in the front suspension. After the operation, the seal would never set. Always leaked. Took it back to the LBS, 3 to 4 times to try to fix it - even going back to the original weight oil. But, no luck. It was a leak-er, no matter how I parked the bike: hanging up-side-down from the floor truss in the garage; hanging by the front wheel only; or, just standing up-right on the concrete floor. It really bummed me out, that this seal on the front suspension, couldn't be fixed correctly. Anyways, I stopped riding it for a while -- gave it to my stepson, who's riding it on occasion. He's not as active in his biking endeavors like he used to be. Me, I've got a Scalpel 900 now. And am making full use of it out on the trails.

    Project update!

    So here's the story so far. Got the 5th last week, and got around to doing the tab mod's today. For the record, 7/8" ahead of the existing hole, maintaining the same amount of material as above the existing hole, got me a HTA of 69, STA of 71.5, and a BB of 13.5, ( headshock "floor shimmed" to a 520mm axle to crown). Right on the money= The mod was easy, but as a caveat, I wrench on, and dremel on things all day. The holes were easy, just punched a starting point, drilled the first side, then used the sleeve from the 5th hardware, as a guide, I clamped it in the tabs, and lined it up with the bolt, worked great! Broke out Mr. Dremel, and finished the job. Here's a few pics of the project. Now I just need a Lefty, I hate waiting!
