    2012 Cannondale Flash Carbon 29er 3

Thinking of buying this bike and have questions on the front derailleur. The Web site (FLASH CARBON 29'ER 3) says SRAM X7 direct mount and the crankset is 39/26. Which exact model FD does this use? If I were to change the big ring to say 36t, it seems I need to change the FD also? Is it possible to put a Shimano E-type FD (without the back plate) on this bike? That seems to allow vertical adjustment for different chainrings, right? What does KP-123 do (http://www.cannondaleexperts.com/Can...3_p_803.html)?

Well, it seems I have found the answer: low mount S3 for SRAM, and the Shimano E-type would work too. Is that right? Still not sure what KP123 does nor if the bike comes with it.

You don't need to change it, just move it down to work with the smaller outer ring. There is adjustment there for that. I personally like the 39 on mine, but I did not keep the stock cranks that came with it. I am running a set of FSA SL-K on mine. Nothing was wrong with the stock set, was just looking for something a little lighter.

    What kind of adjustment ?
As far as I know, there is NO adjustment to the FD height.
There are definitely different FD for different chain wheels size.
Love the 2x10 39/26 and I climb a lot of hills with it. 39-11 great combo to crank up a speed on the flats.

I stand corrected, I thought there was an adjustment for height. Guess I was looking at my road bike rather then my mtn. Seems odd there is not some sort of an adjustment though.
That being said that X7 may not work with a 36 in the front as you are planning on doing unless you switch FD's.

Not really sure what that part does. Definitely does not allow for up and down adjustment unless it just mounts the FD a little lower to allow for a smaller large chain ring. Just calls it a spacer and says not much else about it.

38 works fine with the derailleur, but I don't know about 36. I changed my Scalpel from 39/36 to 38/24 and prefer it a lot. It's TWO extra gears not just one, and I need them both in Arizona. Also, 39/26 is a 120mm/80mm bolt center diameter, and 3622 or 38/24 is 104mm BCD, so you will also need to change the spider, which is easy to do on Sram, but is another $100. Most 2014's and late 2013's ship with 38/24 . IMO this is a better setup for a 29er.

It turns out the bike is a 2013 F29 Carbon 3 (F29 CARBON 3 - F-Series 29er - Hardtail 29er - Mountain - Bikes - 2013), so it comes with 38/24 chain rings. It should be fine for me; just wanted to know more about the bike and what my options are. Thanks for the replies!

It looks like the 2014 F29 Carbon 1 uses an XT "direct mount" FD (F29 Carbon 2 - MOUNTAIN - BIKES - 2014). Would that actually by the E-type FD (Shimano XT FD-M785 Front Derailleur - Double | Competitive Cyclist) show here? Shimano's "direct mount" FDs seem to be high-clamp (Product), and it looks like the F29 frames are all similar in terms of FD mount.
