New question here. 01 jekyll 900sl bottom bracket upgrade?

My wifes bottom bracket is getting some play in it. Looking to possibly upgrading the the crank set but not sure what would be compatible. It has a shimano bb-5500 in it now 68x109.5 bc 137x24 . Basically i am not sure what all these numbers mean. So how will i know what othe crank set and bottom brackets will work. thanks for any info.

68x109.5 bc 137x24 - It has a 68mm bottom bracket shell, which is common. The spindle is 109.5 mm long. The spindle length is dependent on the crank, so if you switch cranks you may have to change the spindle length.

    bc137x24 means it's english threaded.

If it were me, I would swap the crank out for an external bottom bracket type, like a Shimano Holowtech. You can get the Deore 532 for under $100, or you could spend more and get an XT. If you go with an external bottom bracket type, you just need to put the spacers on the right cups per the instructions and it's almost foolproof.

I think that bike came with a "in house" crank set that used a Shimano V1 type splined BB, the type for Shimano 3 piece cranks ie 105, Ultergra, Dura Ace, and XTR.

Upgrading to a new 2 piece crank set with a external BB would be the best option and shift much better. Go into Your local shop and see what they have.
