When does Cannell Trail usually open up?

Thinking of planning an early-summer trip down from NorCal. Obviously it all depends on the snowpack, but just hoping for a ballpark figure. May? June? July?

    Any insights would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

The last 2 years it was open Memorial Day weekend. It will depend on the snowpack and whether the spring up there is warm or not. Many years ago there was a 6 to 10 inch snow on Memerial weekend. Early May you might be able to know when....

    Big snow last time

We did it the first weekend the gate was open 2 years ago and we crossed a lot of snow and fallen trees. It was still fun though and the lower part was still sandy.
Don't be the 13th inch. Keep single track single!

I'm prett sure we hit it in July this past year and it was warm firm with only a couple places where it was loose and dusty.
The year before I'm thinking it was September and it was pretty dusty and loose.

I think we hit JO / Shirley Meadow in May and there was snow at the top but only a little bit.
I'll have to check and see what the dates actually were.
    ==============
    Actual dates:
JO April 26 09 then followed up again on October 25
    Cannell June 27 09

It was warm last year. We were one of three groups on the trail. I think we had about 20 the other two groups were about 3-4 each.
The year before something was burning several miles to the south and it was almost like riding under overcast.

JO last April still had snow at the top although not much.

    Just Outstanding / Shirley Meadows.
Same area but only about ~15 miles.
Great trail not as challanging as Cannell as long as you take the fireroad return.
If you turn right at the top of the fireroad and continue on the goat trail it gets a bit ugly IMO. I did it that way the first time with a couple other riders. Second time 10 of us split up and 5 went the fireroad with 5 going the singletrack. We finished about an hour before they did. Third time 5 of us hit it and we all came down the fireroad.

    Watch out for the manznitas.

Good reason for a earlier trip here
