"West Nile Virus Confirmed" sign on Dirt Mulholland by "The Hub" (Santa Monica Mnts)

I just got back into riding last month. I couldn't make the ride I was supposed to go on yesterday, but my buddies went. They told me at "The Hub" up Dirt Mulholland, there was a big sign saying the West Nile is confirmed as being present there. Its been a few years since I have been up there...

    Has anybody else seen this???

I wonder if this means that a single mosquito was traced back to have originated in these mountains, hence their need to post a sign.

    ??

We''ll just have to ride fast enough to outrun the mosquitos! I haven't been up there in a while and haven't seen that sign.

I am not familiar with that area but there are "sentry" birds around Southern California that they test and anywhere horses are being kept they are likely to test. Human cases of WNV have been reported in every state except Washington and even there animals have tested positive. The good news is very few people infected develop severe illness and those will tend to be older folks and people with compromised immune systems. If you're worried apply some bug-spray. You can learn more at CDC's website, here's a link: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/west..._factsheet.htm

People report dead birds here http://westnile.ca.gov/bird_report_id.htm. If a bird tests positive for West Nile, a warning goes out for the general area. Sometimes researchers can trace an outbreak to the vicinity of a stagnant pond, then they spray it to kill the mosquitos. I know two guys who were hospitalized with West Nile. Both got pretty sick and mentally confused (!), but both recovered. One, a man in his sixties, had what the neurologist described as a "hot brain" on the MRI scan. That guy was in overall poor health anyway and his recovery took longer, but he's okay now. Many people probably get infected each year with West Nile but experience such mild symptoms that they never even know they were ill. In summer of '06 I got devoured by mosquitos at Point Mugu State Park during a dawn ride. I was breakfast for clouds and clouds of bugs. Afterwards I counted some 45 bites, true misery! Later I developed chills, fever and nine days of headaches. That was probably West Nile, but I didn't bother with a doctor. Treatment is generally just supportive anyway. Very severe cases might warrant Interferon.
    Never give up, never surrender.

West Nile? Big whoop. Unless you have the immune system of a malnourished 80 year old or are an infant, both of which I highly doubt, you need to worry more more about the smog you're sucking in during the ride, or the traffic on the way to the trailhead, as much larger risks. That is, if you feel you "must" worry about something.

    Enjoy the ride.
