    Trails near Mission Bay ?

    I am going to be in the Mission Bay area next week with the family and thought I might try to get away to do a ride or three. Any group rides day or night? Or other suggestions? Looking for XC, techy, chunky, flowy, 12 to 30 miles. Willing to drive 30 minutes or so to ride. Thanks in advance.

    Tecelote is very close to mission bay, but a very small and short canyon if you are looking to do 12-30 miles.

    You are better off with San Clemente and Rose Canyons to get some good distance in. San Clemente Canyon has some nice single track off shoots with varied terrain, mild technical, rock gardens, creek crossings (dry at the moment). Not a ton of climbing though.

    For a great resource on San Diego County trails check out mountainbikebill.com tons of maps, pictures and directions to trail heads for many SD area Rides.

    There is a Bicycle Warehouse very close to mission bay that does group rides from the shop weekly, so I would start with them if you want to meet up with guys.

    Also North of the Boarder Bikes is not to far away and they are known to be a super helpful bike shop in the area.

    Very good!

    There are a few downsides to La Costa (IMO)

    * Not a lot of variety, 3 main trails that all basically go from top to bottom, so to get your mileage in you have to ride up the mountain multiple times. (unless you know how to connect it via some trails to other area's that might not be fully sanctioned trails)
    * 2 miles to the top, but steep and technical climbing in many sections. (This could be a Pro to some, I prefer more gradual and mellow climbs so I can save my energy to bomb the downhill)
    * Zero Shade.

    Pros:

    * Rapid decent
    * Ocean Breeze
    * Incredible Views

    What days are you thinking of riding. Lots of options in PQ and the surrounding areas. I would be happy to go if I can. I live at the foot of Black Mountain and will be happy to show you around or give you options.

    Just ride around the bay. Go from PB all the way around. Hit Kojacks down by the roller coaster for some killer greek food. Get some beers at the Sandbar. The ride isn't very challenging but the scenery is unbeatable.

    Probably ride early Friday am or Saturday am. Do, either of these times work for you?

    los penasquitos... not too many climbs... just be careful when you end up in mesa when you climb the power lines trail.. there are some trails there that you cannot ride during the day, unless you want a fine.. lots of bikers do nite rides there as well ( guilty here ).. at night, all trails are open ..

    my suggestion.. climb the power lines.. play around mesa ( only if you bike at sunset ).. down cobbles.. wagon wheels crossing, back to waterfall and head back to parking lot..
