Wow Kragu, I had no idea that the trails up there went on and on like that. This trail reminds me a bit of Gas Pipe, too. Do you shuttle to the top or climb all the way up?

There are 4-5 really great rides in the Rocky Peak area. Johnson's (fast, chattery, punchy climbs), Chumash (rocky up top, flow on the lower half), and Hummingbird (fast up top, techy/switchbacks to the bottom - easily the most difficult of the 3) are the fun descents. Johnson's, Chumash, and Las Llajas are the climbable ones, and you can access any of the descents via any of the climbs, but to get back to your car, you have to take a descent on the right side of the hill. Johnson's is on the Chatsworth side, all of the others are on the Simi side. The only time I've ever involved a car is if I wanted to climb one side and descend on the other. Hummingbird (and its close-by illegal neighbors) gets shuttled by many, but everything else you have to earn.

I'm heading out on Friday afternoon if you want to join in. Probably up Chumash and down HB. I should mention that Rocky Peak FR is fun, too, which you'll spend some time on, unless you do an out and back.

I posted this in the Lunchbox forum - here's Johnson's:

Too warm for me to ride in the afternoons at this time of the year. I'm a morning guy for the most part. Is the place a zoo on weekends?

Chumash and HB see the most use, but I often have Johnson's to myself, even on weekends. Even then, the former two are rideable, especially if you start early. Las Llajas is a wide fireroad in a canyon, and you can ride it at any time without difficulty, if you mind your speed around the blind corners.

I've never had anything but positive encounters with hikers and other bikers in the area, possibly because I usually wear a bell.

Labor Day morning might work for me...

Let's keep Labor Day morning open as a possibility and see how it goes between now and then.

    Nice vids, thanks for posting.

I'd love to join you guys if you don't mind...? I'm fairly capable on both the climbs and descents so you wouldn't be dragging an anchor, and have heard good things about HB etc.

I haven't ridden that trail in literally a decade, but I do remember the mist blanketing the valleys in the morning. That was before every phone was a camera phone, and I never got around to bringing the overpriced 2MB digital camera with me to snap an image. But, those pics are basically what I had in mind.

View towards Minarets/Ritter range from on top. Made it up before the first gondola riders headed down. Counted about 10 riders on the early shift this morning.

Lakes below. Fishing pressure drops immediately after Labor Day. Usually you'd see boats and float tubes everywhere early in the AM
