    Sam Merrill condition

Does anyone know the condition of Med and lower Sam Merrill?

I rode up Chaney and did Sunset/El P. a few weeks ago, just after the rains. I rode up Chaney because I was told lower Sam Merrill was unpassable on bike.

    Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    tep

I don't have your answer Tep,...

...but I like your line of thinking for our upcoming ride.

That being said, seems like an awful lot of climbing for a guy who is worried about his current cardio shape

Did the route this past Sunday. Up Lower Merrill and the fireroad to Inspiration Point - down Middle Merrill, Sunset and Altadena Crest.

Lower Merrill is in pretty decent shape. There are no slides or anything like that. The bottom half is very smooth and grippy. The upper half is its usual self.

The Echo Mountain connector has some minor slides, but you can ride over them.

The fireroad is in rather rough shape since the rains. Lots of sand and rocks were washed down. There is a major trench running down the road up near the Alpine Tavern ruins.

Middle Merrill is very rough, but still fun. Lots of small and medium sized rocks littering the trail, and some pretty good ruts here and there. There is some major erosion around the lower waterbar portion, so be careful there. Also, it appears the some hikers have been sabotaging the trail by placing large rocks in stategic locations to stop bikers. Keep on the look out.

Sunset has gotten rather beat up, but it's still all rideable and very fun.

Altadena Crest is very rutted and has a couple muddy spots.

    Enjoy!

    There are a few

places that you might have to walk, but other than that, the Merrills are in good condition.

I climbed up form lower Merrill to the Inspiration Point and hit meddle Merrill and Sunset to JPL about two weeks ago, and the trail was pretty good especially meddle Merrill.

    Hope this helps.

Whats up Scott? Did this one about a week after the rains and everything is in pretty good shape. Alot more rocks, ruts and dirt in places it usually isnt. Ive gotten lazy in my old age, so I rode the big bike which only made it sweeter. Enjoy!!! I still need to make it out your way...one day.
