    Roadkill cougar

Spotted this poor guy on the shoulder of Hwy 8 just east of Viejas.
About 6' tip to tip and I'd guess under 100 pounds.

Such a beautiful and dangerous animal. I can't help but feel very sad...

I can't believe the driver didn't stop to help it.
Once I had hit a huge rottweiler and after it finished somersaulting through the air, it got up and ran in the woods off the side of the road. My friend was like “Hey, aren’t you gonna go see if it’s ok?” Maybe I’ve read too many Peter Hathaway Capstick safari hunting books about following up on lions and Cape buffalo that ran off into the scrub after an errant shot. Ain’t no way I’m chasing a wounded rottweiler into the woods in the dark. Driver was probably scared to death to get out of their car.

That sucks! But there is nothing wrong with picking it up and keeping the skin, or have a full body mount. If you dont pick it up someone else will. Road kill is free for the taking and such an awesome creature shouldn't be disguarded as trash.

Just make sure it is dead. Can you imagine that thing waking up in your back seat!

    jeffj Yep, definitely a bobcat...

Bobcats are way smaller. I think the word you were looking for is Cougar, Puma but not bobcat.

Nope. You've quoted me incorrectly and taken it completely out of context.

I definitely meant to say "bobcat", just like I meant to include the winking smiley emoticon immediately following the word "bobcat".

At any rate, I was referencing an earlier thread where xjbebop posted a photo of an alleged juvenile puma sighting and was being told she was wrong about being a puma and that it was in fact a bobcat.

You mean your avatar is not a likeness of you.... notice the winking dog in my own avatar. Oh, the irony

And just to make this circle of confusion complete, you've called me "expert"

I just finished reading "The beast in the garden", a very good book about mountain lions becomming habitualized to people in wondering into urban areas.

That is a beautiful animal! It is sad. =/

JeffJ, ROFL!! I got the inside joke since I had read the other thread. You had me laughing out loud hahaha. good one!

Wow, you have to worry about those loins, especially when they're on fire. Hard to control, just ask my wife.

damn ! - I live in Rancho Carillo - that's close. I used to see bobcats all the time down in Flightline a couple years ago before all the construction started. I spent many a solo night rides out there. I guess those Mountain Lion warning signs at La Costa are legit. I mean I know there out there but it's still kinda creepy to have a sighting that close to home.

Ya, I spoke with Markus about the mountain lion sign there.
He kinda rolled his eyes and said; "Ya, we've had a sighting."

Over the years at Flightline, I've seen bobcats, coyotes, plenty of rattlesnakes, gopher snakes, tarantulas, and horned toad lizards.

The last time I saw a mountain lion on the trail was at Black Mountain Park about 12 years ago.

Road kill is NOT free for the take here in Calif. It belongs as property of the State. You may not capture, pursue, take, or reduce to bag with out proper tags and license. In Calif, mountain lions are protected non game species. Ask a game warden. You do NOT want to be in possession of a mountain lion carcass in our state. You can not even legally take a mountain lion outside the state of California, have in mounted, then import it.
