I'm going to be taking a new job in Santa Monica, so I don't think I'll have time to do my usual evening weekday rides at Chesebro or Las Robles, near where I live. I'll probably be taking PCH to get home, and I am wondering what good rides there are on the way.
The only one I really know of would be to ride Sullivan canyon from the Pacific Palisades side. I've only ever riden it from the Valley side though, so I don't know what kind of access there is (parking, etc).
Check this map. If it looks like a trail or fire road, it is. Pretty much all of it is rideable (depending upon your skill level), though there are some issues with legality. Check out information on Topanga State Park and the Santa Monica Mountains before you go ride, so that you don't end up with a big ticket for riding illegal trails. Also, Sullivan and Will Rogers are really busy on weekends - a bell is good, and riding at non-busy times is better.
Actually you have like half the mountain range at your fingertips. It depends on where you want to ride: close to work or closer to home? You'd probably do both for variety/times sake. Most people head up Westridge or Sulli ridge where you can go nuts with the loop options. Near PCH you can ride Paseo Miramar for nice views and pretty hikers. Up PCH on the way home you can ride the Backbone trail from Kanan or ride the trails in Malibu Creek State Park.
Yeah, I live in Oak Park. I think I'll be checking out Sullivan for some weekday rides when I start the new job. It'll be nice to do the uphill first, too!
