    Pretty cool

Just heard from a fellow IMBA member that they (IMBA) may be starting a new volunteer trial program in SOCAL...perhaps part of SDMBA.

Volunteers will be called Trail Rangers and Maintenance Personnel, which would fall under the auspices of the newly created State Trails and Management Policy.

As with any volunteer program, each volunteer would be provided an official t-shirt to wear while carrying out their duties.

    On the front would say:
    Trail
    Rangers
    and
    Maintenance
    Personnel

On the lower back would say:
    State Trails and Management Policy.

I'd volunteer for the t-short alone...who is with me?

Well, I got the socks, and I'm already a 'certified' national bike patrol' member, as well as an all-city parks/open space patrol member,so how much more of my valuable off-time will this take?

I think it's a great idea. San Diego needs all of the incentive to move in the right direction that it can get. And we are the ones who need to provide it. Otherwise....you know what will happen.

Some of those yellow shirt patrol guys need an attitude adjustment. Most of them are personable, though.

There was a trail volunteer up on Mt. Laguna....88 years old. The ranger up there introduced me to him. He said he was in the process of scouting out a route for a new trail for the mountain bikes on Wooded Hill, which is officially off-limits to bikes and horses.

Maybe he could be the "poster boy" for that 'attitude adjustment' you are talking about.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Besides, it's not TRAMP...it's Trail Rangers and Maintenance Personnel....or TRMP for short!

....but if you just move a few letters around, it spells MTRP. And if that's the case, then your 'trail work' is gonna involve bulldozers, because that's basically what we are told believe are the 'trails' in MTRP....wide enough for two jeeps to drive side by side.

This is a possible future trail project that SDMBA will be involved with but at this point its merely under consideration. The LMVA member you spoke with is a volunteer, not an employee or spokesman with the USFS and is totally mis-informed...

Yes, as I posted he is/was introduced to me as a volunteer, and one with a very positive attitude, IMO. He had absolutely nothing negative or derogatory to say about mountain biking, or SDMBA, either.
As an attitude example for how/what a trail volunteer ought to be, I thought he was very cool. I hope I'm as capable and mobile when I'm 88 years old myself.

I've met you up there, too Mark. I really appreciate all of the effort and work that you have dedicated to trails, especially trails that include bicycle access. I told you that in person.
Mt Laguna trails are one of one of the main reasons I still donate money to SDMBA.

I hope you intend to keep up the good work, and if you do know or encounter that fellow, who should be pushing 90 around now, well, a little kindness can go a long way.

Did this old, curmudgeonly volunteer live in a small camper parked in the Red Tail Roost parking lot and have a wobbly walk about him...if so, I talked to him, too, about two weeks ago, nice fellow!

Yup, I think that might be him. Good to hear he's still up and about, Chief. And that was just my point: helluva nice fellow.
