I have 3 weeks off for Christmas so I'll be riding as much as possible to avoid doing yard work! If any of you would like to join me, just let me know. I can ride almost any day except 1/4-6 when we'll be in Laughlin. There are great, accessible trails up here from Devil's Punchbowl in the east to Golden Eagle in the west and lots in between. Consider this a year round invite to ride some different trails especially after the Station Fire has closed many trails "down below". Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
I ride south on the Old Ridge Route a couple miles to Liebre Mountain road (forest service dirt road) then up about 4 miles to the trail. I go up the trail until it ends at the PCT then take the trail all the way down to the old Sandberg site. I've never shuttled it (not opposed to shuttling but not real practical on this one) nor have I ridden up the whole length of the trail. Now would be the time to try riding up the whole thing since the rain has packed down the soft stuff on the lower 3 miles. Should get some rain up there tomorrow too. The weather looks good over the weekend. Cold weather's not that bad. The climbs are almost always warm and I carry more layers, gloves etc. for the descents. It's a great time of year to ride with the damp trails full of traction!
Glad you liked the ride! That area is like an interval training course with all the short climbs and descents linked together. I never thought there was that much climbing there; 2500 ft. in about 13 miles! Wow! It doesn't seem like that much since there are no long, death march climbs. Let me know anytime you can ride while you're down here. When the weather's better, we can ride the longer trails around here.
It's always a gamble! The skies could have easily opened up on us at anytime. Let's keep in touch and ride soon! Now we know there are other AV riders on this site.
When we did GE we rode it up the dirt road and then crossed over on the trail and continued up. Eventually turned around and headed down back to the entry road and turned right a mile or two to get back to where we left the car. I was slow on the way up. One of the other guys said he had fun but he hates to climb (in spite of being better than I am at it) and wants to shuttle everything.
