Night riding is allowed at Cheese. Lights required, and 15mph speed limit, neither of which apply to hikers, runners, dogs, or horses. Local contiguous areas managed by MRCA, Rancho Simi, and COSCA close at sunset. The boundaries between Cheese and other jurisdictions that close at sunset are not well marked. The parking lot gate is locked with a BIG lock soon after sunset, so park outside the gate if you want to use your car again that night. There aren't many spaces available between the gate and the road, so you might consider using one of the other access points (southern access on Chesebro, Doubletree, Smoketree, King James/Eagle View Park) for easier parking.
Doubletree and Smoketree trailheads are on residential streets, parking is fine, but the few times I've parked at (instead of ridden to) those trailheads, I parked at one of the nearby parks instead (Conifer and Kanan, or Doubletree and Deerhill) because they have bathrooms and drinking fountains. The southern entrance to Cheese is just north of the little collection of houses you pass at the bottom of Chesebro Road. If you don't turn right at the stop sign to head up to Cheese, and instead continue straight, you'll come to another park on the right in about a tenth of a mile - Agoura Park - and you can park there to use the southern access. Parking is legal alongside Eagle View Park, but DON'T park in Oak Canyon Community Park (Hollytree and Kanan) for night rides, as they lock the gates. Parking on Hollytree just east of the park is common, as there's a condo complex there.
You can also park at the northern end of Las Virgenes Road. There are apartments there and you can park on both sides of the streets. From the trailhead just hang a left after the fenced gas pipe (on #9 on map) to get onto Sulphur Springs.
Rode it last night with the secret agent . We were able to park right outside of the park entrance gate, no problem. Saw a few other biker's lights in the area but never crossed paths with anyone after dark. Climbed up Chesboro Canyon to Palo Comado fireroad. Did China Flats loop at the top and took Palo Comado out. Extremely dusty now. It looks like a grader has gone through Palo Comado. Sand traps everywhere now, use cation at night.
Critters seen/heard: Scorpions, a coyote, nighthawks, and owl, a bunny, and a bunch of stuff moving through the bushes.
Sounds like you had a great ride, good! And a good critter count! I almost always see nighthawks out there, but I've yet to see a scorpion while riding. That's pretty cool!
