    Good job! Mammoth this weekend

opening weekend people.. who is going (besides me and my bro)?

i guess there is no issues with wearing full face helmets and having multiple inches of travel. so if that's what you ride, rock it.

i've called 'em like a billion times and they keep saying it's opening this weekend. of course, nobody knows if the "top" will be open. ya know.. that's just too specific (heh).

whatever.. i'll be there on my un-Lucky-7. ridin' the lower trails at least. i am sure the top of Velocity will be closed.

Flew right over mammoth yesterday and the top still has a lot of white all the way down to McCoy. The backside looks nice with a lot of brown..should be about right in a few weeks with a few good heat waves.

".. call back Friday. They are working on melting snow blah blah..."

sounds like we might get some top action .

    - The following lower mountain trails will be open: Uptown, Downtown, Paper Route, Big Ring, Timber Ridge, Lakes Trails, Juniper, Lower Bullet, Lower Follow Me, Shotgun.
    - The shuttle bus will start running on Saturday every 20-30 minutes from the Village for access back to the Adventure Center from 9:00 to 5:30.

i'm OUT. if i can't change my reservation (in town) to another date, we may go up and phuck off in town and ride the Volcom Bros. skatepark. else.. eff this weekend in its a$$.

and PHUCK YOU MAMMOTH for not keeping your website HONESTLY UPDATED. just like any other ski resort, you used deceit to keep up the biz for this weekend. i.e., the mtn is NOT really opened. it's kinda sorta quasi opened. phucking ***** pussies.

fvcking pussies. i can totally believe that they did this. a-holes. sure sure.. nobody can count on mother nature.. AND WHERE'S GLOBAL WARMING IN ALL THIS?!?! .. but still, they had to have known at least a week ago that the trails wouldn't be cleared. yet there's nothing on their website to indicate that.

"FVCK YOU MAMMOTH YOU SOCK CORPORATE KOCK" on the back for me. s/b nice. i'll post pics when finished.

i mean what? why NOTHING on the site? so people would continue to make reservations? YES! OF COURSE!!

so lame. a simple "The mtn will partially open. The gondola won't be running .. blah blah.. these trails.. blah."

    NOTHING.

there are many years that this is the case, happens alot. just wait a few weeks and chill. the kitty litter will still be there for you. one year we bought a lift ticket (they said whole mountian is open), then closed lifts within 10 minutes (before first run) and would not refund our money (they said the shuttle bus is still working, ha). mammoth is 100x worse than whistler.

yes. i worked at a mtn (Mt. Bachelor / Oregon). i know they are really evil and have enacted laws that are designed to deprive you of your money under all circumstances.

hate and disconent. i was able to cancel my reservation. i am going 11th - 13th. then again 25-27th.

it's just so lame.. that there's nothing on the webstite that really gives any good honest information.

me and my bud are still beefing over Mammoth's website not keeping the public informed on what the real deal is. that, and i had to brawl with some barely english literate motel owners over my cancelling a reservation 'cuz it was close [but not there] to the no cancel deadline.

wtf mammoth? you are pieces of $hit. Mammoth didn't plan to open the Gondola until July 3rd.. yet nothing was on their website until last saturday.. the day the park "opened".. which as we know, it really didn't.

    sick. pieces of $hit.

Velocity, Kamikaze and Upper Off the Top open Tomorrow (6/28) and trail crew is working hard to get more terrain open. There is more to opening up a trail up here than just letting the snow melt unfortunately; the pumice trails gets fairly eroded during the spring runoff and must be repaired and the winter blowdown needs to be cleared before a trail can be safely opened.

Well, just got back from Mammoth. Only the lower trails were open all week. While I was disappointed, I'm going back soon. Loved it up there otherwise: fishing, hiking, great place to stay (Westin). I had to laugh at all the armor and full-face helmets on the shuttle bus for the lower trails. What a joke! I was fine with my 4" travel and cross-country gear (no lycra!).

It was all lower lower stuff: shotgun, big ring, paper route, bullet, etc. I also rode up the road and dropped down Mountain View trail, but there was still some pretty big snow banks on it. No chairs or gondola were open to mountain bikers yet. I missed it just by days, apparently.

    Dearest Kocksuckers (bob & howeler),

I called everyday at starting one week prior to the date i had a reservation to go there. i got the same run around everyday: "Call on Friday.. blah blah blah."

on the thursday before i was going up, i finally got pushy and was said "Do you know the trails?" The girl replied that she wasn't even a mtn biker and knew nothing of the trails. I asked her to get someone in the office that knew the trails. She came back a few minutes later and stated that there was nobody in the office that was an actual mtn biker.

she finally offered that the gondola was not opening until July 3rd.. that is not a "spur of the moment" decision. mammoth had obviously planned not to open the gondola. they were aware of the date they'd run it long before June 21st, their "opening day".

instead of posting that correct information on their site, they simply said "Opening Day is the 21st". i don't.. nor does anyone here (that is NOT a kocksucker.. like you 2) that the mtn is open until you can get on the gondola and come ripping down from the top.

it's too bad that when brain ded blue balled idiots start late on a thred, they cannot comprehend what is actually going on. sux2 B U. sry.

    so retarded that

    - i know to make reservations in Mammoth weeks in advance because rooms sell out in town very quick and are NOT available for last minute reservations

    - i get a group of people psyched to go up there, arrange for meeting places, car pools, etc. and we talk about it with rabid anticipation 2 weeks prior to the trip

    - i clicked on "Trail Report" everyday hoping they'd update the information, but the link was DEAD (now it works!)

    - we get extremely dissappointed when at the 'last minute', Mammoth finally owns up that mountain isn't really opening.. it's only partially opening

    yes.. i feel so retarded.

but then i read what you write and i think "Wow.. what a smart person. He can read a post and make all sorts of judgement calls. How rad it must be to be him (or her)."

i feel bad for you. you just don't understand the internet. maybe you're too old or too...

PS.. still fragged about lack of info on the site leading up to the "opening day". was a shitty thing to do, Mammoth

    Hey, Dillweed (Loblaw):

In my case, my wife and I made reservations months ago. It wasn't all about the mountain biking. Took the kids, went fishing, horseback riding, hiking, etc. The biking was only one part (mine), but when you're a dad, it's not ALL ABOUT YOU. Tough concept for you to understand, perhaps.

Not the end of the world. I'll be back up there.

NO, i did not make a stupid shirt that says something that stupid. yer taking this whole rant way too seriously. remember: it's the INTERNET.

Mammoth is a bunch of a-holes tho. you just .. yer just ignorant on these matters (and apparently others). sorry to rub it in.

Mammoth posted NOTHING on their website intentionally. they didn't tell people anything.. because they didn't want to lose reservations. and they would have. when i finally 'beat' it out of some retard employee, i called immedatiely and cancelled my reservation. if i had called 3 hours later, i would NOT have been able to get away with that. i'da had to pay some fee.

so YES, it's totally phucked up what they did. not just not updating their site, but being intentionally vague about what would be open (trails / gondola). when the site is littered with all these trails and references to the gondola and that's all off limits.. you know, the problem is YOU DON'T KNOW. that's the crux of it. you have no idea. you just don't get it.

i mean, it's an entire experience. just getting the gondola ride, ripping down. hitting time after time. you are running on about things you should have either asked about or just kept yer face shut about. THAT'S why i ripped on you. get a clue.

as for "acting juvenille".. oh fvcking please.. or you the internet daddy? WHY? why are you doing this? why is the responsibility of all these SoCal whiney old pharts to come here and .. whine b!tch? why do you feel the need to do that? if you don't like what i gotta say, SHOVE OFF. meddling old b!tches. i don't understand you.

"WEBCAM".. lols. whatever. another slice of ignorant Americana. how 'bout clicking TRAIL REPORT and get the lowdown? huh? think of that? the webcam is for SNOWBOARDING (or skiing, if you swing that way). there's not detail with what is actually going on. so clueless this one is!

yer "Starbucks" analogy was sooooooooooooo far off base i just don't think you'll ever actually get it. but unlike you, i don't care if you stayed mired in blissful ignorance. go learn on your own. you cuold been constructive and asked me (even tho the info is already there). but you had to run yer mouth, clearly illustrating your ignorance.

and to both you: use the "ignore use" button.. i'd hate to see a cuople of geriatric whiners get so wound up over some internet rant that they keel over their mornin' victuals.

define irony please? Is it you creating a thread whining to socal about how ****ed up Mammoth is?

Oh and about the internet, I don't know about you but when someone says something or they are going to do something and they don't it's kinda funny. Kinda like how Mammoth posted one thing and didnt do it. Maybe that's similar to how you said you were making the shirt and would take pics when its done (but in-fact had no intention of doing so.) I can only base my information off what you said happened or you're doing.

You claim it's only the internet but there's only one ******* who's wound tighter than Barbara Bush's *****. That's you. Internet King.

lost 15 minutes I will never get back

If Mammoth had the whole mountain open on "opening day" it would be a miracle. It never has and probably never will have the whole thing open on opening day. Didnt this year, didnt last year, probably wont next year. Surprise surprise. Wipe off your tears, kick off your heels and go another weekend. It will be OK. I promise.

I would be less worried about how much of the mountain is open and more worried about how much of the forest around it is on fire and how smoky it is I heard residents in the Owens Valley have been told not to go outside because of poor air quality.

    mammoth trail question

me and a friend are going up this wknd (fourth of July), I've never been before, and just wondering with the trails listed in the "trail report" as open, what should I expect...in terms of riding that is.

I'm bringing an Uzzi VPX, just because I don't think I have to worry about pedaling, so might as well bring the couch!!

Should I expect tech rock gardens, a couple booters, and/or drops?? I'm from the LA area. Can you compare any of the Mammoth "open" trails, to some of the local stuff??

just trying to get an idea of what to expect.
    thanks,

hmmm... boblaw, redspot and howler haven't already giving you enough good advice? i mean, they are are so full of it..

well, i don't know what is open. i haven't called this week 'cuz i am gonna be in Kernville all weekend. YOU need to call up there and find out which trails are open. last time i checked, the gondola was going to open TODAY.

so .. that means trails from the top are open. at least some are. the top of Velocity won't be open. Kamikaze is just a maintenance road (or what mtn biker would call a fire road.. except there's nothing to burn up there). so it's boring but very fast.

maybe Skid Marks is open. not a difficult trail. very rocky and moderately quick. after that.. i mean, it'd be totally speculating on what's open.

there's some decent rock gardens and decent drops on the trails in Mamm. there's some pushing / pedaling involved unless you are just doing the runs under McCoy.

    let us know

I'm going up there for the first time tomorrow. How would you rate the "open" intermediate and advanced trails?? Is there enough open for a day and a half of fun??

There is a small section of HAB on Skid Marks near the top, it's melting at about 5 or 6 feet a day. Otherwise between that and Off the Top, head on down the mountain. there is still also some HAB and snow drifts on Gravy Train and Bearing Straight also.

Shock Treatment is it's brutal self, grow a big pair and have your A game on if you are gonna drop in on that one..

Today is my 4th day on a demo Bionicon SuperShuttle on Mammoth Mountain. It's getting better and better every day. Now if we could just have some people learn how to ride without skidding and tearing up the trails and singletrack on the mountain, digging ditches, life would be grand. The mountain doesn't heal like a race track does, with constant grooming.

Mammoth is looking super natural this opener. That means none of the trails have been sanitized. There's lots of unforeseen obstacles. Ride in control, or else they might reach out and grab you.

Ouch, sorry I missed the more complete opening. But like I said, Mammoth is an excellent place even without the full mountain open for biking. Blasphemy, I know.... I can't wait to get back.

BTW, it was getting very smokey there last week (I left Wednesday). I imagine it's worse now, but don't know for sure. It's something to consider.

Thick smoke this AM. Cleared around 10 AM. Much better on the mountain than in town.

It blew out nicely by noon, clear until dark then it seemed to come back. Hope it is not thick again tomorrow, I'm making another run to the summit.

I made a run at 530 from the main lodge to downtown. Passed 12 people from top to bottom, anyone from here? Only guy in spandex riding a 5.5" bike......

Friday had some smoke... got a way later start than i intended. managed 5 runs.
    Kamikaze - Shock Wave - Richter - 1x
    Chainsmoke - 1x
    Velocity - 2x
    Bullet - 1x

    Saturday was clear of smoke.

    Kamikaze - Shock Wave - Richter - 2x
    Bullet - 1x
    Flow - 1x
    DC-10 - 2x
    DC-10 - Downtown - Shotgun - 2x
    Velocity - 1x
    Brake Through - Flow - Pipeline - Dowtown - Shotgun - 1x

... BEAT! outta there. rained almost the whole way back. was awesome. got to town and streets were flooding, etc. rad. love the desert rain. rain stopped and just chillin' watching the lighting storm. very nice.

i suck. the rock gardens are still tooling me. went over the bars in left hairpin turn in about 2 feet of moon rock. slid out in (NO braking) in another hairpin. but yeah, LOTS of laying the bike down in the duff.

Skid Marks not open.. not sure why. seems clear of snow.

headed back July 25-27, Aug 1 & 2 and many other dates i am sure.

How are the temps up there at Mammoth?

I just bought my bike last week and my buddy and I are thinking of heading up that way after a few more weekends of adjusting to our rides locally. I saw the site said they had trails for anyone so I might make it to the top. I have snowboarded down Mammoth but the bike I am still a little weary about.

Any guesstimates to how long one run from the top can be on average for an intermediate trail?? Or should I just go and find out??

just go. 99% of what you'll get from this place is lip service. or worse.

mammoth is a no brainer. all killer and no filler.

and when you get tired of seeing people on big bikes with big suspension and they're sporting big grins and they're blasting past you, you can go rent a Kona Stinky with 2.7" tires on it and go get a grin of your own.

well.. not all the runs are/were open. Twilight Zone isn't open yet. the top of Velocity wasn't open.. but that does not look all that good. a long traverse (most of the "top".. then it goes through some rock / trees, but then just to the normal / lower part.. meh).

3 days of just non-stop rippin' down the mountain. the weather is spectacular. no idea how many runs we did. or how many times i went over the bars (~10) due to rock garden or deep powder.

place is going off. and by that, i mean it's basically EMPTY. SOOOOooo glad that there are so many pu$$ies who can't handle a bit* of loose terrain. no lines. just empty.

the jump park is good. the tables off of Velocity are good.

oh yeah, the chair off Stump Alley Express is killer. it gets you to the beginning of Techno Rock.. just killer. i'd never done that section of terrain before. has a nice steep star and 2 sweet drops (1 ladder, 1 rock). nasty rock garden as well.

going next weekend (Aug 1, 2). heh. heh.

You should go. There are a number of trails you can use to descend from the peak down to either the main lodge or town (and a free shuttle from town back to the lodge) that you could ride on an old-fashioned hard tail or rigid (lot of people did/do) and that will take you 30-90 minutes to ride after you leave the top. Check out their map LINK and click on the blue-square trails. Everything yellow or green you can handle and none of those are a "waste of time" on your first time there unless you're already on a big DH bike and looking for the gnar. You can ride all day if you're willing to put on some mileage and take the longer tracks.

If you're looking for the gnar, there's plenty of that, too. It's a great place to ride and a good town to chill in.

Heading up Tonight (8/15) for the Weekend

Anyone else gonna be up there? I'll be the guy trying to look good on my Green RFX. Sadly, I have way more bike than skills.
I'll probably be posing at the main lodge.

Here's the bike doing its typical Homer thing (sitting on a couch and being clean):

Just got back about 2AM last night. Had a frigging blast! Saturday we went and rode dirt bikes up on Lookout Mountain Loop, with a detour to the Bald Mountain Lookout. Then hit the mountain yesterday. First time I had taken the big (for me, the XC weenie) bike up there and it ate it up. A lot of stuff is really blown out (big pumice pits in the turns) that really killed the flow. But there is enough tastiness that I'm going to try and make it up again in a couple of weeks. That should give me enough time to get the bikes squared away again.

I will be headed up for the Labor day weekend. Proving to myself just how small my heuvos really are. Look for the guy on a enduro (non SL) too scared to go off anything big.
