So, I used to do this ride a lot, starting at the Long Cyn. trail head and come out at Chesebro and the 101 freeway. I want to do it again, but on a 1x9. But, that first climb at the trail head is a killer, even on a 27 speed, no way I can do it on a 9 speed. Is there a better, less steep way around that first climb.
I think you are talking about the single track at the parking lot. There are a couple of ways to avoid it. About half way up 1st St. above the park there is a trail that takes you up to just East of the top of the single track. You can also take the lower trail that goes behind the houses
there was a trail that goes through those green gates but now its fenced off... that was the easiest way through which most riders took.
now you either have to do that singletrack or go up montgomory which is the lower one on 1st.
once first merges to one lane there will be a pocket on the left right before the houses begin again. thats the start of montgomory.
try google maps, you can also start at challenger park and get to montgomory. that way you can park somewhere officially marked not like at the start of montgomory where you block the access gate.
