Gate at Long Canyon/Wood Ranch ?

Anyone know why they closed off the trail head with a new gate and lock? Seems counterproductive since hikers/bikers/runners are creating a new "Unauthorized" shortcut trail from the parking lot thru the scrub.

    Message from RSRPD

I ran into this problem coming from the other direction, and contacted the Parks Dept. Here's their reply:

    Hello,

Sorry for the delay in responding. The lock was apparently placed onto the
gate/fence by the Simi Valley Unified School District. They own the
property on the other side of the gate. Apparently there have many reported
incidents of misconduct occurring on their property, causing significant
concerns with the adjacent Homeowner's Association. Those two groups had a
series of discussions and meetings over time, which resulted in the lock
being placed on the gate to restrict access to the School District's
property. The Park District learned that this occurred only after the lock
was placed there. The School District is an agency that is independent from
the Park District, and it has the right and obligation to protect its
property. We hope you find this information helpful.

Kids living in the tract just north of the trail have set fires in the area a half-dozen times in the last five or so years, but the biggest complaint seems to be the high school kids drinking in the parking lot and on the trail. Not something us normal trail users can do much about. Challenger Park is having the same problem, but the Bridal Path HOA has a LOT more clout than the school district, so their problem is getting some attention from Simi Valley Police Dept. I have no idea where this is headed, but I've contacted the school district to ask who I can complain to in order to get the trail re-opened. I still haven't gotten a reply, but I'll try again next week.
