Rode with OO7 last night. Did Sully Ridge to Dirt Mully, through Bent Arrow, back on Dirt Mully to Nike, then back to Sully Ridge and down. Take off time was about 7:45pm. We spent a bit of time relaxing and cooling off at Nike. Home at 10:30pm.
Saw a Great Horned Owl, a 2 foot Southern Pacific Rattler, a Deer, and a Tarantula. There was a few fellow night riders out but it was mostly very quiet, very peaceful and most enjoyable!
As most already know, the trails/dirt roads are very dusty now.
that is pretty rad, i always loved being surrounded in darkness. Makes you feel like, your the only on the planet. cool video and Thanks for sharing....
Gawd that video looks slooooow . . . but it was slow! I've ridden that trail dozens of times during the day and just ripped right through it, but man at night its a whole 'nother story. As we were saying last night, VERY easy to over-react/over-correct.
Night riding adds a whole new dimension to riding. Getting lights was one of the best things I did for MTB.
Having just picked up lights to combat the inevitable loss of daylight hours, it has definitely added a new experience to MTBing, especially when you have a group of friends shredding through the darkness. Cliffs and drop offs appear bottomless, riding through brush and trees makes you feel secluded and having trails to yourself is nothing short of EPIC.
I was explaining to a 10 about how I ride my bike at night. She responded "so you're one of those goes that almost runs me over at night!". It was a good in and things went well. Ride your bike at night if you wanna pick up chicks!
When do you guys ride, I can pretty much say I only do night rides. Mostly caballero downhill, and others parts of Santa Monica mtn, Cherry canyon, la tuna canyon single tracks, fryman canyon. I love single tracks looking for new night mtb friends to ride with, hence why I joined.
Thanks for posting...
i bet the trail changes a lot at night regardless how many times you've ridden it. I just bought a chinese knock off thinking of buying another one, based on your experience would it be better to have both a head lamp and handlebar mount? As I can tell from the video you have to slow down more due to interrupted visibility.
My riding buddies want to go to Fullerton Loop but I don't care much for that trail. Where would you recommend a good one for first time night riding?
I was headlamp only until recently, but like having both much better. Seems like the lack of shadows with just my headlamp ment less depth perception, and I had a hard time telling the difference between a rut and a dark patch of dirt.
Not that it makes much difference at the crawl speed I ride at
I have 2 900 lumen on bars, 2 smaller 350 lumens on helmet... But I do pretty fast defends. I think I have the fastest night time for caballero downhill. I'm still thinking of adding more lights, the weight doesn't bug me at all. I made my own lights.
Most trials have huge drops off, cliffs and trees in the way, not a beginner place to be at night. I would say las virgenes is a good night beginner place due to it being single track, curvy. Nice hills, but no steep sides, or cliffs, not ny trees or objects to crash into, at night I've hit 25-30mph safely with no fear of crashing. Only thing here is, don't stand next to the bushes.... This place has lots of ticks, as long as your rolling or standing in the middle you'll be fine. Then again all places do have ticks.
