    Any Big Bear Info
I have been hearing that they may open early this year due to our abnormally warm winter. While I have considered this just rumor, I am wondering if anyone else has heard this? Or if you have ridden up there what are the trail conditions like?

Thanks WCH ... I knew that but I hear they are having a hard time with keeping good snow pack etc... Also I know a fair amount of people will take the fire access roads up and ride. Just looking for trail conditions and thoughts on the snow levels that are currently up there. Im sure it will be a normal Memorial Weekend opening again ....

    ^^^^^^ yes

We have a trailer there (I know ghetto, but its being rented now) but the trails are like
open in April, second week if no snow like a real dry season (ugh--dry seasons ruin our economy, no happy faces up there). The forest service does an excellent
job of cleaning up the fireroads and ST and they start doing it in late March/April
No use in doing work if it starts snowing again.
Don't worry, the place will still be there in spring. This note is brought to you
by Boo Bear's Den Restaurant. Stop in when you're in town and say hello
to Rick. Breakfasts, Lunch and Dinner. That's Boo Bears Den off of Pineknot
in downtown Big Bear Lake, CA.

My friend has a cabin up there and he is up there just about every week. He hiked Cougar Crest Trail a few days ago and said it's 2"-3" of sinking mud right now...

You can ride up here, but not on the Snow Summit side. Mostly fire road both on the north shore and the east end, but you'll still hit patches of snow/ ice and lots of mud. Right now Tues.3/6, 6:50pm, windy and slightly snowing.

WHY DOES EVERYONE THINK OF USING THE LIFTS WHEN THEY RIDE BIG BEAR?!

You can climb the mountain up any number of ways via fireroad or trail. Plus, you have the other side of the lake to ride which I think is better anyway.

Well the flat landers don't have much time when doing a day trip so climbing up, which takes an hour or so may burn up their "Totally D'Hillin" time, which I understand. But as a BBL tax paying citizen resident, I also can't see paying the $20 lift tic :D But whatever floats your boat, just come up and spend your money:)

Same experiences here. I was up there twice last season. It's no secret. They were clearly not enforcing their bike restrictions on weight < 35#, tires <2.5", and whatever else is stated on their website. Guys were getting Intense 951s and similar DH rigs loaded with no comments from the lift operators.

If I go back to BB this year I probably would not get a lift pass. I'm an XC rider that likes the downhills, but honestly the trails aren't that great. They were super powdery and blown out. A few good XC trails exist, and now that I know the area I'd just ride up on the forest roads to hit them.

If you're a DH'r then the lift makes sense. If you are XC rider visiting for the first time, the lift also makes sense.
  • 03-08-2012

I heard from a reliable source that they are going to enforce the bike rules on the lifts, due to conflicts of out of control bikers with other users, not that that will solve the problem

They say that all the time, but if the past is a indication of the future it only last until people start handing over their money to get up the hill.

I sure hope they open up soon... the wait is killing me! Last year I went there to ride for the first time and they closed the lifts for bikes the following week. From what I saw it doesn't look like they enforce the "No DH bike" rule. There were more than a few guys with full blown DH rigs there that weekend.

Well, there hasn't been any mention of when they'll open up the lifts to take bikes yet. I'd assume they'd close the resort down for a bit, to do whatever maintenance that needs to be done then open it up for summer season shortly thereafter.

Either way, it's probably not too far off.

The Forestry Service is negotiating contracts with perspective management companies to run the 2 campgrounds, Pineknot and Serrano. Pineknot is next to Summit and Serrano is on the North Shore. Recreation.gov states 5/31 for opening which sucks. They normally open the middle of this month.

^^^^^^^What?? No way. I was up there on Tuesday. There is absolutely no snow off the trails, and it was slushy (to the point where you had to walk across some of the flat areas because it was too slow), and there were multiple bare spots on the trails.

Don't worry group, after today's storm, I doubt they get any snow, the runs will be open soon to biking.

There are rumors floating around that Summit is going to open to bikes with an all new mountainbike park, don't know if its going to happen this year or not. Rumor has it that a serious effort will be made to make it a world class bike park.
All I ask of anyone reading this post, that when youre riding up here, especially on the Snow Summit side, ride responsibly, so the share holders and risk management could finally give the go ahead on this plan/ rumor.

Same owner of Bear Mountain Resorts. Pat Follet of Team Big Bear fame, has been spearheading the project, he's been to Mammoth to check out their operations, there is talk of northshore style bridges and stunts, trails for all disciplines, ziplines, climbing wall, food service, etc. They want to make it truly world class and have a variety for every level of rider, as well as amenities for non riders.
As far as the "rumor" is concerned, I've been hearing this from more and more people up here, so I really believe its going to happen, in which capacity this season, who knows, but in a few years, I think it will be everything we can hope for here in So.Cal

Was there on Sunday, It was nice to see all the bikes out there. Trail selection is still somewhat limited but I am happy to see they were more tolerant to "Big Bikes". I talked to Pat at the end of last year's season and he mentioned that they were being more "lenient" with the rules. This past weekend they didn't even flinch with our 40+ pounder DH machines. Hopefully it lasts. It would be nice to have a full blown bike park in BB, I remember the days when Summit had a real park and it would be awesome to have it in our backyard again.

  • 06-11-2012
    bauhaus
Most of the stuff is more XC/All-Mountain in nature. If you take the lifts up to the top of Snow Summit, there is not a lot of climbing. If you want to do loops around Snow Summit or you want to do some of the trails on the other side of the lake then there will be climbing involved. It really just depends on what you want.

There are a few Downhill trails if you know where to look, but most of the fun trails are flowy singletracks. A few of these can get really loose, but there are no huge drops, etc. that you would see at a place like Mammoth.

I run 2.35 Hans Dampfs on the front of both my bikes - 26 and 29 full susp. I have a 2.1 Ground Control on the back of my 29er and a 2.2 Rubber Queen on the back of my 26er. You could certainly get by with a lot less tire if you wanted to.

There is confirmation, on my part, that cannot be confirmed......I know that sounds uncommited, but my sources would like to keep it that way.
The Skyline Trail is well under way, 3.5 miles, of proposed 15 miles of awesome singletrack is already cut, but its going to be and hopefully stay more XC orientated, since it is a multi-use trail, with small climbs, flats and small DH's. I had the opportunity to ride the unfinished cut sections a few times before the snow and have to say that, if the rest of the trail is like the first 3.5 miles, we are going to have a world class trail up here...something long over due.

Any idea if upper fall line and Colin bailey are going to be restored? I heard they got trashed by our friends in the forest service...
  • 12-31-2012

The Forest service is trying to close some of the horribly cut illegal trails, the ones that may be fun, but cause lots of damage from run off, although I haven't ridden upper Fall line this past year, I heard that they are restoring it, but I dont know exactly what that means.
With the Bike Park opening....you really wont miss some of those off mountain trails anyway, which will be safer for other trail users anyway.....cant count the close calls I've had with some idiot who rides fast pass other users.

Jeff, can you elaborate more on the "bike park"? Are they actually going to allow bikes to go down the ski slopes or are we still going to have to go into the National Forest? Hopefully it will be a little more DH friendly.
  • 01-07-2013
    Hurricane Jeff
Yes, the bike park, if everything gets the green light, will have all types of trails on the mountain, including dh trails and northshore type bridges, ramps and ladders. The masterplan is to have a pump track, possibly a bmx trail, also for non riding folks, zip lines and climbing walls.
I'm hoping as well as most of the riders up here hope this all happens, but we will all believe it when we see it.
  • 01-07-2013

It HAS to be dh friendly or else what's the point?
  • 01-08-2013

Are there any planned meetings coming up to discuss this? I would hope so as they need to have a plan in place to make something happen this summer. Is the park going to be solely owned by Summit or will the NFS be in the mix? Anytime government is involved, it slows the process down.

It will be a Snow Summit thing but they have to get permits from the forstry, just like any other entity using public land. There are no public discussions, as none are needed, the team at SS has tons of experience in this field and have travelled all over looking at other existing parks, including Whistler.

I have not heard of an official opening day but I would guess mid May, since there is still snow on the mountain. I will keep everyone posted as I hear any news

Snow Summit and Bear Mountain are now closed for the 2012/13 ski and snowboard season, however summer activities are right around the corner! In addition to the Sky Chair and Golf Course, we have some exciting changes in store including new purpose-built bike trails and a 1,050 foot zipline.

The Snow Summit Scenic Sky Chair is scheduled to open weekends only beginning May 25th and daily beginning June 15th. The Bear Mountain Golf Course and Driving Range is scheduled to open May 17th, however the Pro Shop will be open for season pass sales beginning May 13th.

Great place. Pretty sure this is going to be an annual trip for me. That elevation was brutal but helped when I got back to sea level.

Anybody know whether Fall Line is open? I heard rumors that Upper Fall Line was blocked off this summer for some reason.

Both Upper and Lower Fall line are open, but please, if your not going to ride inside SS, please respect the other trail users, hikers, bikers and equestrians, I had too many close calls by some morons, who for some reason, cant or wont give the right a way to uphill riders and hikers. My 10 year son and I have almost been plowed into a few times, if it happens( getting hit), Im going to stick their full face helmets and Gopro up their arses with their heads still in them, maybe that would make the Gopro video of the week. Sorry to rant, but its happened too many times, we are trying to make Big Bear an awesome bike riding destination again, lots of hard work by lots of people, dont need anyone to screw it up.
