2004 Fall Fat Tire Classic - Mt. SAC College

Is anyone going to this race this year (October 31)? Or has anyone gone in previous years? I am trying to get a feel of what the course is like comparing to some of my more local rides, such as Aliso Woods and El Morro. This is going to be my first race (I have only been riding since the begining of the summer) and would like to get an idea from those more experienced on what I will be up against. It would be sweet if people were interested in meeting up locally and driving up to check out the course.

Good job! It is a blast....

The MtSAC race is a great race. Anyone that races regularly is encouraged to move up a class so that the beginner class is truely a beginner class. Most people abide by this.

The awards are 5 deep and are the BEST of any race. They are figures of animals cut out of 1/2 steel and place in a wood base.

The course is a 9 mile lap course. 1 lap for beginners, 2 for sport and 3 for expert. There are some short and steep climbs, especially when you get out of the cow pature. There is some fun single track and fire road and 1 climb that only a few experts can climb; everyone else hikes it.

The course is on the campus of MtSAC and it would be very difficult, if not impossible to pre-ride it due to all of the fences. They open them up on race day only.

    Here are last year's results:

Is there anything at El Morro or Aliso Woods that is comparable to the course itself? This being my first race, I would like to be as prepared as possible.

I've never riden anything like MTSAC. There is NOTHING technical; no rocks, no rooted switch backs; just some (about 4) short/steep sections about 50-100 yards in length. There are two really fast descents; one on packed single track and the other near the end of the race in loose sand. Most of the single track is either loose sand or dirt. All but one you definitely can make in you 'granny'. I walked most of them last year because I was riding my single speed for the first time.

The most technical part might be avoiding the 'cow pies' and the cattle pens you race through. The cows are STILL in the pen but they have someone 'shoeing' them to make way for the racers.

Don't go to be a hard core racer type; go to have a BLAST and try to avoid laughing too much on the climbs because of all the fun you're having; EVERYONE is having a great time, too.

I rode past the MTSAC today on the road bike and saw the cows in the pen and the course off the side of the road. My wife and I commented how much fun that race will be this year. I plan to dress up in a costume because IT'S HALLOWEEN!

got my A$$ kicked there about 5 years ago in the 30 something sport catagorie, and it has since been a long term goal of mine to be solid middle of the pack sport class.
I think i'm almost there so I plan to test my fitness level once a year and Mount SAC is it.
Sport class is hard I imagine top of the sport class would probley be like doing the hardest route of the outer loop at Morro canyon 3 times really fast gasping for breath anaerobic, ouch this freaking burns fast.

    hahah

Well, I live in walnut, but havent raced the course. The hills arent two mile climbs, and the incline wont be crazy steep. Sounds fun, I think I will do it!!!!

Thanks for the link - once I got there, I had to navigate around. Ultimately, the search feature recognized "Fall Fat Tire Classic" - here's a link: http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?event_id=1165942

Those that are interested in the race we should meet up and do some "training rides." I could use some more experienced riders to show me some good techniques.

What catagorie are you all racing?

As much as I want to be a solid sport class racer, I think I'm going to puss out and go beginner to get a little more race experience first.

this is the only race that i consider doing every year so i always race beginner. i did finish in 4th place last year in the 30+ class, but i am in worse shape this year. it is definitely a fun race.

    i'm in...

i've wanted to try racing, and this seems like a good venue since it seems kick back and all.

i will be riding my 29er ss, so does that mean i gotta do the sport class ss??? two laps? do i have an option for another group???

i think i wanna try that castaic race too.

i guess i can find out what class i race when it's time to register. cheer and see ya'll there!

    Good job! SS Classes

    There is:
Beginner Men SS - 1 lap
Beginner Women SS - 1 lap
Sport Men SS - 3 laps

I raced Sport SS last year and that was my first SS race although I raced gears before. You decided, but the Sport Men SS class will be HUGE this year. Last year it was the largest class.

Castaic is NEXT year and put on by TeamBigBear.com It was a 3 lap course and had 3 long and steep climbs. Gear down appropriately.
If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room.
