I'll be there. It will be my first time on these mysterious trails in Angwin.

As far as I can tell it's PUC itself, not the Eagle Cycling Club that puts it on: Napa Valley Dirt Classic

NVDC is put on by Pacific Union College, which is a Seventh Day Adventist school. Adventists don't drink and don't eat meat.
The whole town of Angwin was started as a Seventh Day Adventist town. For the most part you have to be a church member to own property there.
The little grocery store in town sells no alcohol or meat.

But the race is awesome and they are very nice people! I am not sure I can make it but this race is my favorite one. The trails are really fun and some fast swoopy sections. Then mostly single track with tight twisty turns in the trees. There is one hard climb near the end. It is 20 miles long and they have a give away at the end. Once you go, you'll want to race it every time.

I'm not racing this year. But I have race it a few times, about 15 years ago.

And if I were to have pre-ridden some of the course today (not that you would), this is what I would say:

The trails are damp, and in fantastic condition. Wet leaves cover smooth, tacky hardpack. As it dries out this week, the trail conditions should continue to improve. A small-knob, low-resistance tire is going to be fast on these trails. Trails should be dry and smooth, with no mud or dust.

A couple sections of trails need some attention before being raced on, and I hope that they actually get the attention they need in the next few days.

Poison oak has gone turbo this spring. Bring something to ease the pain.

...And speaking of "easing the pain"; be respectful with your post-race beverages. I'm not saying don't have any. But a koosie, brown bag, or even a coffee mug would be better than flaunting it in front of the volunteers. They're cool about it if you keep it on the DL, okay?

Here's a couple theoretical pics and a video from today. Remember, no pre-riding the course.

So now the next question: anyone interested in carpooling to/from there? I am in South San Jose near highway 85 and semi-near highway 101. Pmarshall? Mboldt? Anyone? No biggee if no one wants to hear my ADHD-riddled blah blah blah blah on the long drive up/back. Just thinking of saving money by carpooling.

I'll be there racing sport 34 and under or whatever. I am still back and forth between SS and gears. Leaning towards gears cause it seems like there is a lot of flatish, spinny stuff. Any thoughts? I just want to ride the bike that will be the most fun.

If you race SS, gear it so that the flat, spinny stuff isn't so flat and spinny anymore. Don't gear for that big ass hill at the end, just expect to walk/run it.

    (this is my strategy anyway)

Porkstacker- You're going to do just fine! Don't put too much pressure on yourself and remember to ride smart out there. Prepare for the "whoops" section where other people will dismount because they weren't ready and in the wrong gear. You know the course, ride the hell out of it! Remember after that long hard climb out, pin it to win it. After the climb when you get back to going around the lake area or by the airport, you need to be riding at threshold. I passed a few people on this part last time and then passed the 5th place guy as we were coming back to the track. I have come in 4th place two times before and both times I was seconds off the 3rd place time. So if you are getting back near the track and you see anyone ahead, do everything you got to pass them! Have a good race and I will be eager to hear how it went.

Missed my start as well. Quite a mess of people and tiny signs and not very loud race command. Maybe the speakers broke? We could see Start #1, Start #2 but not the descriptions under. I was in category 11 so I assumed I would be in Start #11. Once enough people had cleared and I could read the sign for start #5 (or something like that) said "Sport women" I knew I had made a terrible mistake.

Didn't end up factoring in so much, I lost 3 minutes on the start but I would not have gained more than one position. Pretty fun course and cool t-shirt!

Who's racing in The Napa Valley Dirt Classic this year?

Great race but man I am kind of bummed.

I raced in Pro Singlespeed and ended up in 2nd, but a mechanical cost me the win. For the first time ever, i am running a SS with a chain tensioner (on a Giant XTC Carbon with rigid Niner fork and 36x19 gearing). I've only ridden this set up about 10 miles so far, and i plan on racing this at Sea Otter on Friday, so my goal today was to shake the setup down and suss out any problems before the Otter

Long story short, i dropped my chain 4 times. 3 out of the 4 times I was able to stop briefly and place it back on the chainring then resume. But the 4th time was catastrophic...it basically broke the chain...and it happened right as i exited the last bit of singletrack onto the grass field. So i started running. All i had to do was run the grass and freaking track...i was spent but i ran as fast as i could. Unfortunately Cesar Chavez from Ibis / Buy Cell caught me before the finish. Soooooo close!

I will be adding a chain guide for the Otter.

Will write up a full race report on my team's blog (link in my sig) and will post the link here too

Pretty stoked for my team mate Jared Kessler who got 2nd in Pro behind Barry Wicks.

Thanks all you guys for the kind words of encouragement. However, I made a really bad rear tire choice decision: 29er Maxxis Maxxlite is NOT the correct rear tire for NVDC. It works great for CCCX and thatís about it. Lesson learned. Managed 17th. I literally was slipsliding all over the place on the loose descents, switchbacks, and downhill corners, almost crashed three times, and went off the course two or three times. After having done really well for about the first five milesówas out in the front group somewhere, I really had things licked on the uphill sections, passing people quite easilyóI decided it would be in my best interest to be a proper gentleman and let the guys queuing up behind me go past, which I did to about 10 or 12 people. I donít want to be ďthat d°ckĒ who was holding people up. Downhill talent wasnít there to help me with my bad rear tire choice today.

However, the weather was just about perfect, and the crowd was HUGE!!! I still enjoyed myself.

Yah I used a really warn out small block eight on my 26 inch hardtail. I could have used more traction.

And leaving with the proper starting group would be good also.

I'm really stoked I went up and raced. Was first race of year and first time at this race. Really good riding and a great vibe. I also met Leopold for a second at the start. I was guy in blue NAV kit.

Beyond that was a tough day for me. Just felt flat from the minute the gun went off. By the end I was really struggling and spent a lot of time in the granny. Bummed as I felt really strong the last few weeks but, as my buddy says, "sometimes you're the hammer, sometimes you're the nail."

This is officially the last race I do on a geared full suspension bike. SS at Lemurian. Trial by fire. Nice races ya'll. Always amazed at how many fast people are out there!

Tyrone, great race man! I am pretty sure I would have slowed down for someone who beat me soundly and then had a mechanical on the track but hard to say when race juices are flowing. Good luck at Sea Otter!

OK, so considering I was in a field of 54 (fifty-four!!!) riders (Cat2 35-44), I donít feel so bad having finished in 17th place:
    NVDC 2013 race results
Looks like I was in a semi-tight group of six riders all within the span of a one-minute range. Guy in 16th place pipped me by a fraction of a second (his front wheel was about 9" in front of mine at the finish line) but NVDCís timing is by seconds rather than milliseconds.

Good to know that I am getting faster by a couple minutes each year I race there!

Seriously, next time around, no weight-weenie bald-by-design rear tires!!!

Beautiful day to race a mountain bike! I didn't win this year, but I did get my fastest time so far on this course. So cool to be able to ride all of the climbs efficiently with a single 34 tooth chainring - thank you SRAM for XX1!

Who's racing in The Napa Valley Dirt Classic this year?

Well, i found out why my chain kept dropping...the little set screw on my chain tensioner that controls the chainline adjustment fell out at some point. Unbelievable...so without that little screw that belongs in the hole in this picture, that pulley can slide in and out at will, jacking up the chainline with every pedal stroke and impact. Sonofa.....cost me the race...
