... and if we just ... Whiskeytown Nine to Five, Oct. 7, Whiskeytown Lake, CA

It's just a week away, the Whiskeytown Nine to Five, the last race in Team Bigfoot's endurance series. This one is at Whiskeytown Lake, CA, using some of the same trails as last weeks very popular Cal State Championship XC, it's about 70% singletrack and we use a fantastic venue at the Whiskeytown Lake NEED Camp. The camp is a kids' summer camp, with real bathrooms, showers, paved parking etc. Teams can keep expenses down by renting a cabin that sleeps 8 for just $45 a night! Solos who don't mind bunking with new friends can get a bed for just $8 per night. For a review of last year's event go here:http://www.ride424.com/review_page.php?Id=111

WE GIVE $$$ TO THE SEARCH & RESCUE TEAM: Part of each entry goes directly to the Shasta County Search & Resuce, whose volunteers spend the day out on course, ready to provide medical assistance or evacuate any injured riders. Last year we gave 'em $700!

RACE DAY ENTRY: It's best to pre-enter on-line, by mail or in person at the NEED Camp on Friday. Race Day entry is from 6:30-7am only and there is a $10 late fee. Race day packet pick-up is 7:00 to 8:30am, BUT, we strongly urge racers to check-in the day before at NEED Camp from 3pm to 7pm. Riders Meeting: All team captains must attend the 8:45am riders meeting and we strongly suggest that all riders attend too.

DIRECTIONS: Whiskeytown Lake is about 12 miles west of Redding off of Highway 299. Watch for a blue sign reading "Whiskeytown Visitor Center." Be sure to stop at the center and pay your $5 day fee...rangers will ticket vehicles not diplaying a day pass. From the visitor center stay on the main road for about 3 miles, sign-up is at the NEED Camp.

Start/Finish Time & Location: We'll start the race promptly at 9am. The start/finish is in the NEED Camp and will be clearly marked. The race is over at 5pm. Only laps COMPLETED by 5pm will be counted.

Course & Markings: The course is roughly 10 miles long with about 1000' of climbing. We'll use standard arrows and ribbon and such.

Awards: We'll have Team Bigfoot Medals/Headset Caps for 1st, 2nd & 3rd in all categories. We'll also raffle off some cool sponsor schwag. The better you and your team do, the more raffle tickets you'll get.

SOLO CHAMPIONSHIP: We're doing a series for our solo racers. We total your miles from 12 Hours of Weaverville, 12 Hours of Humboldt, 12 Hours of Willamette Pass and the Whiskeytown 9 to 5 and then the top rider in each category will get a TEAM BIGFOOT SOLO CUP CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY (see pic)

CAMPING: There are many campsites available within the Whiskeytown Lake recreation Area. For info contact Whiskeytown Ranger Station (530) 275-1587, or on the web go to http://totalescape.com/active/campstuff/NF/shasta.html

CABINS: Rather not camp? We've reserved a block of cabins right at the race venue. They sleep 8, have a bathroom and come with access to showers, all for only $40. Available Friday night only. Reserve early, there's a limited number of cabins. To reserve a cabin check the cabin box on the entry form and include payment.

*ABSOLUTELY NO ALCOHOL ALLOWED AT THE NEED CAMP: This is a school **district facility, they're very strict on this and will issue citations to violaters.
If you gotta have a cold one, please, get a campsite and have it there.

I'm trying to decide whether to do a 2 man team or go it solo. Same course as last year Vic? BTW, very fun course for the Whiskeytown Classic!

Its the only way to go. Sounds tougher, but its really only as hard as you make it. I did it last year and really enjoyed it.

I'd also like to know if its the same course as last year.

    Good job! Solo Cup Standings

The Whiskeytown Nine to Five is the last event in our 2nd annual Team Bigfoot Solo Cup Series, where solos in each category compete for one of the trophies shown below. It's simple, we add up your mileage at each event, which includes the 12 Hours of Weaverville, 12 Hours of Humboldt, 12 Hours of Willamette Pass and of course the 9 to 5. Some of the classes are going to come down to the wire!

We're in talks with some other promoters and next year we're gonna include a few more races to make it even more fun and interesting. Depending on how many races are included we'll probably do a best 4 out of 6 placing or something like that. We'll keep you posted.

Starting at NEED camp you go Up Rod Brower, down Satans Crack, turn left and go up the road and down into Peltier Valley campground, up the road and turn right on the cannal trail, cross the paved road right below the cemetary. Cross over Shasta mine trail, turn left on Mule Town Road, right onto Buck Hollow, the back on the road to NEED camp, and throw in the little bit of single track the takes you around the hill over to the bridge on crystal creek. That is one lap.

From the map on the flyer it looks like you cross the pavement north of the cemetary and go towards the turd lot, then up the steep way on the Mt Shasta Mine trail, left on Prospect, left on Muletown to Buck Hollow. Then its road to the Canal Trail, through Orfino Gulch (hike a bike), then back to NEED Camp. So the map on the flyer is different than last year's course?

    Yeah

Last year, thats what they where going to do, then realized that people would be turning out close to 2 hour laps instead of close to 1 hour, and Vic wanted to keep it close to one hour laps.

Nate, the course goes up Mt Shasta Mine trail the easier way past the mine? Cool! I wasn't looking forward to that steep climb. Are you racing? BTW, who's Rod Brower? I've always heard that trail referred to as lower Recliner.

You know Ron, I have no clue, I've just heard it called that by others. Lower recliner works too. Yeah I know, not having to climb the Shasta mine climb makes it so much better. The only really evil climb is up the lower recliner.

I am racing, solo single speed.

    Results?

Anybody seen the results yet? I know how I did, but can't remember how anybody else did. I was at the awards ceremony, but can't seem to remember much about it. Too tired I guess. Next year? Waaaaay to early to think about doing it again

And if not for the MTB action there, check into the Hobie Catamaran action at the Lake.. .. .. It's been a longstanding tradition also.
